2008 RIDE CALENDAR

Calendar Guide
Different bike clubs use different methods for ride leaders
to convey information about their rides so that interested
riders can determine if a ride is suited for them. Our definition
of ride pace has not been published since we went to the electronic
newsletter format. I have included it in the paragraph below,
since there has been much confusion and disagreement about
what actually constitutes the different pace rides. Also below,
you will find the ride classification table found on our web
page.
Ride leaders should
not feel restricted by the designations. If they want to customize
the pace, they can for example, write B+ pace
to indicate they will be getting into the high end of B and
into some F perhaps. Or the leader could write My
B pace, if he/she has led enough rides that riders know how
their rides usually go. Or, you could write M/B, to indicate
somewhere between an M ride and a B ride.
Pace Definition:
Rides are classified according to terrain and pace. Terrain
is described in terms of local roads. Pace is defined by the
riding speed on flat ground in calm air when not drafting.
Average pace will be lower and will vary with terrain and
other conditions.
Please refer to the club website for a description of
the "ride
classifications", under the "rides"
pull down menu bar. Riders are encouraged to explore the full
site. Members are also encouraged to join the FFBC Yahoo
Group to receive the latest updates on club activities.

Wednesday Pizza Rides.
THIS MONTHS CALAVERAS CLOCKWISE RIDE
Like last month we have a T pace ride for our monthly Calaveras
CW ride, thanks to first time ride leader, Becky Denevan. There
was a good turnout for this T paced ride last month. It was
nice seeing the wide variety of riders that showed up for
the different choice of paces. Any riders that may have been
intimidated by the faster paces that we usually have on the
Calaveras ride, this is your chance to join the group.
NOTE: If you plan on doing the Calaveras ride at an M pace,
please bring a sign in sheet with you. There was a slight
mix-up on the ride leaders, so there is not a designated M
pace leader.
WEDNESDAY EVENING PIZZA RIDE
Join Julia Walker as she hosts the popular Wednesday evening
Pizza Rides for the month of June. The pizza rides will meet
at The Pizza Patio, located at 3395 Walnut Ave, Fremont, (510)
790-1166. Please park away from the Pizza Patio, as this space
is shared. As always, there will be two routes; a longer more
challenging ride, and a shorter flatter ride. The rides meet
at 6:00 PM for sign in to be completed by 6:10. When signing
in, remember to check "YES" or "NO" on
the sign in sheet for pizza so we have an accurate head count
on who is staying after the ride. The pizza order is placed
before we depart. Departure time is 6:15pm sharp. The cost
is $5.00 per person and that includes three pieces of pizza
and a soda per rider. No charge if you're not staying for
pizza.

Sat. June 14 Death Ride Training #3:
Hamilton/Sierra
7:45 AM 80 miles, 5B
RATING: 3 PASSES, 10,000 ft. If you're doing the Death Ride
this year...or you're just looking for a challenge this weekend
and have nothing better to do, then this ride's for you. We're
riding both sides of Mt. Hamilton, followed by the Sierra
Rd. climb (as seen on TV!), and ending with the rollers on
Felter to get us back to Fremont. Last year we finished with
just under 10K feet of climbing by the end. If you think this
is a tough ride...well, yeah, it is. But consider that the
Death Ride has about 50 more miles and about 5,000 more feet,
and it's all at altitude. So it's all relative, right? We'll
start at the Longs in Warm Springs. It's June, so we'll start
early (or early by my standards) and have water stops before
each climb.

at Andronico's Market for refueling. We'll get back on Foothill
head towards Palo Alto behind Stanford University, then down
Santa Cruz Ave. and make our way back to Dumbarton Bridge.
Please note..no one gets left behind. Rain cancels.

Week In JUNE
Sat. June 21 Stevens Creek Res
8:30 AM 55-60 miles, 3-4 M--B Lite
If you rode the loop to the reservoir from the Sports Basement
on one of our starts there, then you will be familiar with
the climbing portion of the ride around the reservoir, which
isn't too terrible. Meet at Newark Java. We will head off
across the bridge and connect with Foothill for a straight
shot to the reservoir for a water/potty stop at the park there.
We will do the Mt Eden-Pierce Rd. loop and head back on Foothill
with a coffee--food stop along the way.
I added the B-Lite designation because Foothill is a natural
for cranking it up a bit, and we will put in quite a few miles
on it. But don't worry, there will be regroups as in a regular
M paced ride.
