[423]
Paso Robles Adventure — Santa Margarita Express Ken Goldman & Cindy Maxwell October 29, 2016 9:00 AM Paso Robles City Park, 12th St. and Spring St. 53 2500 [421]

This is our favorite ride in the area. We start out with some rolling hills to the southeast taking a coffee break at about 15 miles at the general store in Creston(pop. 15) with fresh baked cookies. Along the way we will point out the small-scale railroad and trestle on a farm as well as Alex Trebek’s horse ranch for all you Jeopardy fans. At 32 miles we will get some great sandwiches at the general store/deli in Santa Margarita and take them to eat in the city park. Then we will ride a flatter portion through Atascadero and some short hills into Templeton at 47 miles for an ice cream or cold drink at the convenience store before the last 5 miles back into Paso Robles. Although this is not a flat ride, there are no long steep hills on this ride and because of the three built in breaks, it seems easier than it sounds. Route sheets will be available.

[423]
Los Altos Gary Smith October 29, 2016 9:30 AM Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (Marshlands Rd., Fremont). 38-40 1200 [421]

Yes, we really are meeting at 9:30 AM. If you show up earlier, you might be the only one there. We will cross the bay and take Alpine, Arastradero and Purissima to Los Altos. Our return ride will be on Foothill before crossing the bay again. We’ll regroup a few times and make sure nobody gets left behind. Bring $ for a refreshment stop in downtown Los Altos.

[423]

From the top of the hill above Del Valle, there are options to turn around there or descend to the lake for extra mileage and vertical feet. Women’s Social Ride: Hallows Eve Carrie Payne October 30, 2016 8:30 AM Bicycle Garage, 5006 Mowry Ave, Fremont 15-20 [421]

This is Hallows Eve if you dare outfit your helmet, your bike or yourself to celebrate Halloween on Hallows Eve. May the best one win a prize. Come join us this month for another low key, leisurely ride around the tri-city area. This ride is geared (pun intended) towards our female riders but men are also welcome. We will re-group as needed. Nobody will be left behind. Optional coffee and extra socialization at Starbucks at the end. Rain or threat of rain will cancel the ride.

[423]
Paso Robles Adventure —Around the Hills of Adelaide Ken Goldman & Cindy Maxwell October 30, 2016 9:00 AM Paso Robles City Park, 12th St. and Spring St. 28 2086 [421]

This is a very pretty ride through the vineyards west of Paso Robles. It has some rolling hills and there is one longer climb of about 3 miles which is similar to the climb to the false summit on Calaveras. Bring two water bottles and some snacks as there is no place to stop for food until we get back to town. We will make arrangements to use the restrooms at one of the wineries along the way. The ride finishes up with a fabulous 7-mile descent back into town. Route sheets will be available.

[423]
Short Notice Ride to J.D. Grant Park Joyce Tanaka November 6, 2016 9:00 AM Warm Springs Starbucks, 46655 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539 40 [421]

The 8-mile climb up Mt. Hamilton road averages 4-6% and is worth the ride. We will ride into the park and see some of the 10,000 acres that make this the largest Santa Clara County park. On the way back, we’ll stop at Noahs/Starbucks in Milpitas for a cuppa (bring $$). Don’t forget that this is the first day on Pacific Standard Time.

[423]
Tour de Fremont Hills: Palomares and Foothill Vanessa McDonnell November 8, 2016 8:30 AM Isherwood staging area on Isherwood Way at Paseo Padre Pkwy on the dirt (north) side of Alameda Creek Trail 38 2,000 [421]

Since I’ve heard that a change is as good as a rest on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month we’ll do one of my favorite local hills – Palomares. We’ll do a clockwise loop going up Palomares and Dublin grade followed by the rollers on Foothill. We’ll return through the canyon with the ride once again finishing at Peet’s for a well-deserved coffee. Note: M paced riders may do Palomares out and back per ride leader’s discretion. Rain or significant chance of rain cancels. The ride leaders will post to the FFBC Yahoo! group on the morning of the ride if the ride is cancelled. If unsure of the ride status please call or text the appropriate ride leader (emails after 6:45am on the morning of the ride probably won’t be read).

Tour de Fremont Hills: Palomares and Five Canyons Vanessa McDonnell November 22, 2016 8:30 AM Isherwood staging area on Isherwood Way at Paseo Padre Pkwy on the dirt (north) side of Alameda Creek Trail 38 2,000 [421]

What could be better than a little climbing? How about a little more climbing? For the second Tuesday of the month we’re going to climb our local favorite hill, Palomares Rd., to Castro Valley and then follow it with a little more climbing up Five Canyons Pkwy. All that climbing will be followed by a fast descent into Hayward and a jaunt down Mission Blvd (hopefully with a tailwind) back to Fremont. There will, of course, be a coffee stop, either at Pearl’s by Cal State Hayward or Peet’s back in Fremont.

[423]
Tour de Fremont Hills: Calaveras/Felter and Marsh Vanessa McDonnell November 29, 2016 8:30 AM Old Mission Park, Pine St. @ Ibero Way, Fremont 38 [421]

South of Fremont there are plenty of good hills to climb, such as Calaveras, Felter and the out and back on Marsh. There will of course be a coffee stop cos’ all good rides have a coffee stop. Thursday Morning Coffee Ride – REI to Alum Rock Lori Sommer December 1, 2016 9:30 AM REI, Fremont 34 [421]

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW START TIME FOR WINTER! We are riding to Alum Rock. Since REI isn’t open at 9:30AM, you may need to use the facilities at Starbucks or wait until we reach Jose Adobe. We will ride along the foothills and once we get into the park, there are options to head straight to the Visitor’s Center or climb the Inspiration Loop and/or Miguelito. Also, you don’t have to go all the way to the park…you can turn early to coffee to reduce milage significantly. If you are a slow climber, but want to do the extra climbing, please be considerate of the group and turn around when you see the faster riders returning OR bring yourself to coffee on your own. We will have lunch at Noah’s Bagels/Starbucks ($) before heading back on a flat route, with no regroups. Extreme temperatures, park closure, construction or the whim of the ride leader may modify the route. Rain cancels, check FFFBC Yahoo! Group, email or text me.

[423]
December Jolly Ride Cindy Maxwell December 3, 2016 9:30 AM McCarthy Ranch Shopping Center parking lot, by Starbucks, in Milpitas. 27 300 [421]

Leave the shopping and decorating behind…let’s have a jolly old time on our bikes! Today’s ride begins in Milpitas and loops down into the South Bay. We’ll use the Guadalupe Creek and San Tomas Creek Bike Trails and stop for hot chocolate & goodies midway through the ride. No drops. Faster riders welcome to go ahead. Rain or wet roads will cancel the ride. Changes will be announced on FFBC Yahoo Group site or call/text/email me directly.

Make sure you eat your Wheaties this morning! Today we’re going to do another part of the club’s Primavera Century. We will meet in the gravel lot across from the Sunol Train Station. If it is still full of equipment or gravel, we have permission to overflow into the Sunol Train Station parking lot as a backup. We’ll leave Sunol and travel southwest, up and over the hills past the Calaveras Reservoir and down The Wall for coffee and lunch at Erik’s/Starbucks/Noah’s in Milpitas. This is a simple out-and-back, so we will head back to the hills and grind up the beloved Wall and back to Sunol. We will maintain a Touring through Moderate pace (10 to 16 mph). No drops and regroups as needed. Extreme weather or construction may modify the route and rain cancels. Check FFBC Yahoo! Group, email or call us. FFBC 2017 LAP 11 Palomares Calaveras Clockwise Metric Lori Sommer March 26, 2017 9:00 AM Niles, in the Niles Blvd. parking lot across from H Street 63 3600′ [421]

It’s the last ride of the LAP series, so let’s ride a metric century! We will start in downtown Niles and generally follow the Club’s Primavera 100K route, but backward. The best thing is we’ve already done the climbs on previous LAP rides; we just need to put them together! We will ride through Niles Canyon and climb Palomares. After Dublin grade, we will have a bite to eat at the Corner Bakery Café then head up Calaveras. By then we will be elated to roll back on a mostly flat ride to the start and finally finish our first metric century of 2017! We can celebrate finishing the ride series at Broncho Billy’s in Niles. We will maintain a Touring through Moderate pace (10 to 16 mph). No drops and regroups as needed. Extreme weather or construction may modify the route and rain cancels. Check FFBC Yahoo! Drive the couple of miles to Zachary’s and join us for a slice of pizza after the ride. I’d like to get a count for Zachary’s in advance so please RSVP the night before if possible. No worries about last minute additions to the group though as they are pretty flexible. We can sit outside if the day is nice! No one left behind. Bring $ for coffee and lunch. Extreme temperatures or construction or whim of the ride leader can modify the route. Rain cancels, check yahoo group, email or call me.

Primavera Worker’s Ride TBD April 15, 2017 7:00 AM Mission San Jose High School, at the entrance on Palm Ave., Fremont. 100 [421]

Members/volunteers and their families only on these rides! The full century ride is the final ride of the Progressive Ride Series (PRS). All workers rides serve two important functions. First, they allow those members working in support of the Primavera a chance to do the routes, and second, to check the route markings, and route sheets for errors prior to the actual Primavera.
Be self-sufficient. These rides are the full-length Primavera routes, but with only two fully stocked rest stops (Sunol and Rios Lovell). For those doing the 85 and 100 mile routes (M or B pace) please email Andy Sass (andrew.sass@yahoo.com) for estimating food and water needs at the winery. Please be nice to your ride leader. Let him/her know your intentions at the beginning of the ride, or during the ride if you plan on breaking off from the main group.
If you can drive SAG for the100 mile route, or staff the Sunol or Rios Lovell stop, please email the Ride Coordinator at ridecoordinator@ffbc.org.
If there are any minors planning on doing any of these rides, remember that a Minor Release form must be filled out and given to the ride leader, and any rider under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Please send all corrections/issues with regard to route markings to Andy Sass (andrew.sass@yahoo.com) promptly after the ride so corrections can be made for the Primavera ride the following week.
See the Primavera web page for routes and maps.

Show and Go to Watch the Amgen Race at Mines Rd. and Del Puerto Canyon Rd. Debbie Frederick May 15, 2017 9:00 AM Parking off road at the start of the Mines Rd hill, just after the left turn at the Del Valle Rd junction, on the right. 50 3600 [421]

I will be, one way or another, going up Mines Rd to see the Amgen pro race go by. Mines Rd IS a long uphill to the Junction, (with the Café verified as being open that day). Most of the slope is not that bad- as I have done it twice with our previous Cinderella Challenge training groups! One little section shows on RidewithGPS at 12.8%, but it is short. The upper part of the ride is just like the wooded low slopes of the Sierras, & will be gorgeous. I have confirmed with the Amgen Tour that the racers will be at the top of the Del Puerto Canyon hill approximately 1:15PM- where they have a King of the Hill challenge. We will have time for lunch at the Café before the racers come by. Their route that day can be viewed at http://amgentourofcalifornia.com/stage2. They start at 11:45 in Modesto, & end at the Motor Park at the south end of San Felipe Rd. Note: there are no services or restroom facilities for the entire length until we reach the Junction Café.
This is “Show & Go” for several reasons: I am slow enough that many who would do Mines Rd would just have to be ahead; plus, if we really have a heat wave that day, I may actually drive up Mines Rd!. So, please email me directly if you are interested.

This ride is ideal for those who participated in the Cinderella Coaching Series, and want to continue riding. We are riding to Alum Rock Park with two short rest stops and one lunch stop. We will ride along the foothills to Alum Rock Park. Once inside the park, we will climb Inspiration Point and on to the Visitor’s Center for our second rest stop. We will then ride for another 6 or 7 miles to our lunch stop at Noah’s Bagels/Starbucks, so bring $$. We will then head back to our REI start location along a mostly flat route. Join me for a mellow loop around Woodside and Portola Valley starting from Bayfront Park in Menlo Park. We’ll climb the hill to Woodside and then take one of my favorite roads (Mountain Home) on our way to Portola Valley. We’ll climb Alpine Road all the way to the end, but it that’s too much you can skip the climb and head straight to our coffee stop at Robert’s Market. From there it’s a mostly downhill ride back to the start. We will not be breaking any land speed records on this ride, our pace will be a T-M. Faster riders are welcome too, and are encouraged to do repeats on the hills while waiting for the rest of the group. This ride is perfect for all of our Cindy riders.

Dale and Ken’s Excellent Adventure–Paicines to Panoche Ken Goldman, Dale Blanchard November 11, 2017 9:00 AM Panoche Rd. in Paicines 55 [421]

Come ride a great rural road with no stop signs, no traffic lights, no intersections and almost no traffic -unless you count the cows. This is a very pretty ride; very similar to Mines Road-but much less climbing. It is an out and back ride -27.5 miles out to a bar/cafe (Panoche Inn) with cold drinksand sandwiches available. And picnic tables.
This is one of our favorite rides. There are no long or steep climbs. Difficulty is roughly equivalent to a Calaveras loop with no wall. This is a “Cinderella Friendly” ride. No one left behind.
Preview the route sheet at:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7zcxscd49jsupzv/AACBgLzsQFfE9SCSEIW4tdhQa/Panoche%20Road?dl=0&preview=PanocheRoad.xls

Directions to the start of the ride: Hwy 101 south to Gilroy. Exit to Rte. 25 towards Hollister. Follow the 25 bypass around Hollister and continue about 8 miles south of town on Hwy 25 to Paicines. Look for a left turn onto (little) Panoche Rd (J-1). There is a general store on the left just past
the intersection (if you miss the turn). After the left turn just park on the right shoulder of the road away from the intersection.
Note: There are no restrooms at the start. We suggest you make a stop in Hollister on the way. You should allow yourself about 1
hour and 15 minutes driving time from Fremont.

Bike to Beer Day! (Brotzeit Lokal) Vanessa McDonnell May 18, 2019 8:30 AM Meet at DOWNTOWN Niles parking lot across from H St on Niles Blvd. 57/27 2,128 [421]

We missed Starkbierfest and it’s too early for Oktoberfest but who needs an excuse to pedal to Oakland for some good German beer and food? And since there’s no such thing as a free lunch, or free beer, we’ll work hard to get there. We’ll start the adventure by waking our legs and lungs up with a ride up beautiful Palomares, across Seven Hills (which, surprisingly, has 7 hills!) to Lake Chabot Road, drop into San Leandro and then weave our way through scenic Oakland to our destination – Brotzeit Lokal. We’ll eat and drink (beer optional, please drink responsibly) and then, with full bellies, take the flat way back to Fremont while singing German drinking songs. The return trip will include 3 miles of dirt/gravel trail through the Hayward Regional Shoreline.
BART is close to Brotzeit Lokal so that’s always an option for the return trip if you need to get back early or you don’t want to do the full ride.

Once again it’s time for our annual Das Brew rides (our 6th year!). What better way to wind down the week than with a short bike ride followed by some good, local beer? We’ll ride a leisurely loop around Fremont/Newark (the route changes every week) finishing before dark ~7:30, with plenty of time to imbibe some nice, cold, fresh beer. A flight of 4 beers is still only $8, or you can buy a mug for $6-$7. Beer tasting after the ride is optional. Please drink responsibly! Food is available for purchase at Das Brew (from a rotating list of food trucks), or you can bring your own snacks to share with the group. Adventure Ride–Reservoirs Ken Goldman October 6, 2019 9:00 AM Lake Almaden Park, San Jose 45 1720 [421]

We will ride From Lake Almaden Park up Los Alamitos Creek Trail to McKean/Uvas road. Then past Calero, Chesbro, and Uvas Reservoirs before stopping for a snack/lunch in Morgan Hill. We will use a flat route to return.
To get to Lake Almaden Park: Take 680 south becomes 280. Near downtown San Jose exit southbound onto Hwy 87. Stay on 87 until it ends and then continue south onto Santa Teresa Blvd. In about 1/2 mile turn right on Coleman and left at the next light onto Winfield. Continue down Winfield and you will see the entrance to the park on your right. There is a fee for parking in the parking lot, so we suggest parking on Winfield Blvd. and just riding through the gate. We will meet by the restrooms near the gate at the south end of the bocci ball courts. For a GPS : 5949 Winfield Blvd 95118. We have never had any parking problems, but if the street is full, there is a parking lot for the light rail station which is behind the apartments directly across Coleman.

Adventure Ride–Tracy Overnighter-Day One Ken Goldman November 16, 2019 9:00 AM Niles 49 2235 [421]

We will be riding to Tracy today and returning on Sunday. Bring a small overnight bag to the start and there will be a vehicle to carry all the bags to Tracy; although there will not be any sag available during the ride.

We will stop for coffee in Livermore; then go out Tesla Road to the Corral Hollow summit before descending into Tracy for lunch. After lunch it’s just a couple of miles to our hotel. When we have done this ride in the past, most of us would get together for a group dinner in the evening. There will be a choice of restaurants within walking distance of the motel.

At the time of this posting we have not yet determined which motel we will be headquartered at, although you can certainly stay wherever you wish. We will update that info when it is finalized. Because of that, there might be a change to the very end of the route to take us to the correct motel. Stay tuned….

We will visit our favorites from last year, but if you know of a good light display, let me know and maybe I can work it in. As with any night ride, everyone must have a headlight and a taillight. A reflective vest is strongly recommended. Decorate your bike with additional lights for extra visibility and fun! Let me know if you have any questions.
