PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

From the Summit:

Following November’s club meeting and very informative presentation by Alameda County’s Bay Trail Project Manager, Lee Huo, FFBC’s Board of Directors voted to make a donation to Bay Trail in memory of former member Judy Sampley and in honor of her husband and former club president, Ed Sampley. Ed was passionately concerned with seeing the closing of an important gap in the Bay Trail located in East Palo Alto. Our correspondence which accompanied the donation and the response follows:

“Please accept this $150.00 donation from the Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club. This is in memory of a dear friend and enjoyable cycling companion, Judy Sampley. We would also like to make this in honor of our former club president, Ed Sampley, Judy’s surviving husband. Ed was very involved in our club functions and was, and maybe still is, a dedicated member of the San Francisco Bay Trail organization.

“At our November 3, 2005 monthly club meeting, your representative, Lee Huo came and did a superb presentation on the progress of current projects and left no questions unanswered. Our many thanks to Mr. Huo in sharing with us all this information.”

Correspondence received from Laura Thompson, Bay Trail Project Manager:

“Dear Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club:

“Thank you for your generous donation to the Bay Trail Project in memory of Judy Sampley. I am saddened to hear this news. Please extend condolences to Ed on behalf of the Bay Trail Project.

“When I started for the Bay Trail Project in 1999, Ed was focusing our attention on an important gap in the Bay Trail located in East Palo Alto. He would be pleased to know that last month, Pacific Gas & Electric Company donated $10,000 for the completion of this gap adjacent to the substation near Bay Road. More importantly, they have agreed to work with us to move the fence back from the trail right-of-way.

“The Bay Trail project plans to match the grant and finally complete this section of trail so the Fremont Freewheelers can have a smoother South Bay Loop ride. Sometimes these multi-jurisdictional trail projects take an extensive amount of time to complete, but people like Ed and members of the Fremont Freewheelers are instrumental in seeing that the vision is achieved.

“Thank you again for this kind donation, and I look forward to continued collaboration.”

See you on the road.

FFBC President
