Currently, the 1 to 5 “terrain” rating doesn’t seem to cause too much concern among club members, but the L to F “pace” rating does. Other clubs use different metrics for categorizing their rides and our club might benefit from a survey of different practices in this area. For example, we might want to change the “M” pace from “13 – 16 mph on the flats with no wind” to “downtown Niles to the False Summit in 1h30m to 1h40m in good conditions” or “the Calaveras Loop in 3h30m to 3h45m in good conditions.” Or, we may want to poll ride leaders that we’ve all ridden with, such as Al Quintana, Shelley Wills or Maurizio Gavardoni and get an average pace for their regular rides and work that into a classification. Any club member who wants to join Mike should call him at 510-796-8832 within the next few weeks. He’d like to get this completed in time to present at the February or March club meeting.
