FROM THE SUMMIT

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work.” Vince Lombardi said that and Joyce Tanaka used the quote in her missive to all Cinderella training ride participants. Women training with FFBC’s training rides celebrated the completion of another successful year thanks to the support, commitment, organization and enthusiasm of many people, i.e., FFBC webmaster and the FFBC Yahoo Groups Mistress, ride leaders, etc. I’d like to also thank Joyce Tanaka, Jamie Hyams, Debbie Frederick and Diane Blattner who made it happen and for Neil and Molly for their dedication by permitting easy access to our club clothing. Over thirty women faithfully committed their Saturday mornings to assist 100 trainees reach their cycling and fitness goals. Despite canceling 40% of the rides due to rain, sleet and snow, 45 riders completed the training series.

I am often queried as to, “How the success of this ride series affects FFBC?” Although I don’t have a conclusive answer to this question, for those statistically minded members and with the assistance of the 2005 pedal pounder information, I can provide the following numbers. Of the 247 club members who completed at least 100 miles of club rides during 2005, 51% were women. And, of the 83 members leading rides in 2005, 54% were women. I believe these numbers signify a decidedly more visible presence of women within FFBC and I hold that these rides play a major role.

FFBC’s 34th Primavera Century is quickly approaching. Sally Wilson and her crew of volunteers are working hard to make this one of the more successful centuries in the Bay Area. The Primavera is a huge undertaking for any club and requires the support of all club members. As in the past, we are asking club members not to ride the century but volunteer to provide assistance. Primavera worker’s rides will be available for club members one week before the actual event. Ride sheets will be available and a ride leader on hand for “B” and “M” paces of the 100 miles, 100K, 70K and 25 mile options. There are no organized rest stops so each member will be responsible for bringing enough food, etc. to see them through whichever option they choose.

Also, as has been FFBC’s longstanding policy, April’s program will be devoted to Primavera planning. Sally and her captains will be available to answer any questions and to allow volunteers an opportunity to meet their captain and learn more about their assignment.

I will leave you now with another quote provided by Joyce Tanaka.

“When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.”  H.G. Wells

Good riding!
