FROM THE SUMMIT
FFBC’s 34 th Primavera Century provided another wonderful opportunity for the Bay Area’s bicycling community to participate in a fully supported day of bicycling. With four rest stops staffed by FFBC volunteers and abundant supplies of local fruit, homemade cookies and breads, a little over 800 cyclists were fed, pampered and encouraged over miles of favorite local roads. Available routes ranged from a 100 mile or century route advertising a cumulative altitude gain of 6,100 feet of climbing to a 25-mile route providing a scenic route with minimum amounts of elevation gain. FFBC’s membership rallied to the call and came out in force exceeding 120 member volunteers. The weather gods smiled on us and cleared the skies of rain clouds that had menaced the bay area for the better part of 2006. Although there was still a chill in the air, the day remained rain free and glorious. I heard many comments voicing the now familiar message that our Primavera century had always been and continued to be a local favorite. Sally Wilson, Jamie Hyams and their team of volunteers once again pulled together a cycling experience par excellence. A big thank you to everyone involved!
As you may already know, EBBC plans to celebrate Bike to Work Day this year on May 18. This year marks the 12 th year EBBC has promoted this special day encouraging motorists to put away their car keys for one day and use pedal power to commute to work and school. As in the past, EBBC plans to support several aid stations along more popular commute routes and in several BART stations.
If you haven’t already made plans for Memorial Day weekend, I have a great suggestion. The year 2006 marks the 42 nd annual bicycle celebration of the Great Western Bicycle Rally in Paso Robles, California. There will likely be a strong contingent of Fremont Freewheelers present, several of whom plan to camp and several who have long-standing local motel reservations. Event organizers plan many events suitable for families with small children, chances for cyclists looking for an occasion to show off vintage cycling machines, ultra distance, time trial and hill climb competitions as well as an authentic huffy toss event. Packages of ride route sheets highlighting many local areas of interest are distributed to every attendee, in addition to ample opportunities to socialize and meet new cycling friends over wine and cheese or purchase bicycle gadgets at a well attended swap meet. I plan to be there and look forward to seeing you there.
Until next time, good riding, be safe and support your favorite bicycle club by volunteering to lead a ride.
