May 2006 Ride Calendar
WEDNESDAY EVENING PIZZA RIDE
Come One! Come All! Join Carrie Payne for the return of the ever popular Wednesday evening Pizza Rides. For the month of May, the pizza rides will meet each week at Mission Pizza, located at 1572 Washington Blvd, Fremont, (510) 651-6858. This is the plaza on Washington between Paseo Padre Pkwy and the Washington exit from Interstate #680. Please park at the rear of the shopping complex rather than in front of the Pizza parlor as this space is shared. As always, there will be two routes; a longer more challenging ride, and a shorter flatter ride. The rides meet at 6:00 PM for sign in to be completed by 6:10. When signing in, remember to check “YES” or “NO” on the sign in sheet for pizza so we have an accurate head count on who is staying after the ride. The Pizza Order is placed before we depart. Departure time is 6:15pm sharp. The cost is $5.00 per person and that includes three pieces of Pizza and a soda per rider.
Note: The Pizza Rides are designed as a work out. Meaning that these rides are not your traditional club led rides. A route sheet will be provided but the ride leader does not "lead" the ride like our traditional rides (i.e. the ride leader does not sweep the ride). We suggest riders pair up with other of similar abilities.
1st Week in MAY
Mon. May 1 Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM 1-2 M, 25 to 38 miles
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30. Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Saturday, May 13 Morgan Territory
8:00 AM 5 B, 70 miles
After all the rain we've had, I think it's about time for good, long ride. Let's meet at the Pleasanton Park and Ride (Stoneridge and Johnson Dr, first light after turning right on the Stoneridge exit off 680 North), and take the Diablo route (to the ranger station, not the top!) to get to Morgan Territory Road. We'll have the typical summit regroups and a quick stop in Clayton, but no sit-down kind of stop on this one.

Sat. May 13 Metric a Month Ride #5 - Reverse Primavera
8:00 AM 4M, 62 miles, 3500' climbing
We did it the right way in April, now let's do it the wrong way in May?!? Instead of James Logan, we'll use the Bicycle Garage as the start of our Reverse Primavera Metric ride. The Palomares climb gets done first, and then it’s a nice cruise down Foothill to Sunol and a quick refueling to help us with the Calaveras climb. A quick descent down the Wall to a Cafe Romeo stop, and then a climb up Warren and Mission gets us back to our start. As usual, B pace riders are welcome. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:00 and 7:30 on the day of the ride.

We meet at the Calaveras end of the parking lot.

8:45AM 3-4 T, 30 miles
This ride provides hill experience at a civilized (slow) pace so that no one will feel pushed. We will regroup at the top of each hill. We start at Mission Coffees & More, 151 Washington Blvd., Fremont. The route takes us westward along Wahington to Paseo Padre southward. To heck with gravity -- we'll climb the hills on Skye St., Sabercat Rd., Pine St., Scott Creek Rd., and Calaveras Rd. to a rest stop and snack at Sandy Wool Lake; then retrace our route to climb East Warren Av. and Paseo Padre Pkwy., returning to Mission Coffees & More. Bring water and snacks. [Rain or serious threat of rain cancels; call if uncertain.]

From there we will return via one of the usual routes.

Sat. May 20 Five Canyons from Newark Java
8:45 AM 4 M, 50 miles
A club favorite we have not done for a while, but this time leaving from Newark Java. We will go out Niles canyon, turn onto Palomares road to start the climbing, and eventually emerge from Norris Canyon. Rain or threat of rain cancels.
Some trivia question from the ride calendar editor. #1. Where is Storybrook Canyon? #2. When you ride Palomares road you ride beside two different streams, one each before and after the summit. Which one is Palomares creek? #3. Name the Five Canyons on this ride.

We will start from the Regional Park lot on Skyline, just north of Redwood Rd. Directions to start: Take the Redwood Exit off Hwy 13 and head east on Redwood Rd. Make a left onto Skyline for a short distance and then turn right into a regional park lot. This is a hilly route with almost no flat sections going around San Pablo Reservoir via Moraga. We will have lunch at a rest stop in Tilden Regional Park. Note there is a bathroom and water but no place to buy food. PACK YOUR OWN LUNCH. After lunch, we will return via Grizzly Peak and Skyline. As there are many hills and lovely vistas on this ride, I intend to lead a relaxed Brisk pace.

8:30 AM 2-3 M, 33 miles 800-1000 ft.
R U OUTTA SHAPE 2 ??? How about a relatively easy ride with less than 1000 ft of elevation gain? We will start at the Southeast corner of the Fremont BART parking lot, head up Walnut Ave, Niles Canyon, and Foothill through Dublin to the “Iron Horse Trail”. This paved bike trail follows a creek bed and an old railroad bed from Pleasanton through Walnut Creek to Highway 4. The official ride will end at the Walnut Creek BART station where we can return by BART to Fremont (or shop around in Walnut Creek). Two options will be available. One is a side loop (Crow Canyon and Blackhawk) that will add about 4 miles and 800 feet of climbing, and the other would be to continue on the Trail to the Concord BART station. Details will be on the ride sheet. Bring $ for BART and a snack stop. Rain will cancel (heaven forbid in May !!!! ).

The idea will be to head to the start of the climb together, then head up the mountain at our own individual pace. We'll return the same way. Keep in mind that there is no lunch/coffee stop planned, so be self-sufficient.
