FROM THE SUMMIT
One of my more favorite activities when it is raining outside, or there is nothing interesting to watch on television, or I have a long commute by BART, is to pull out newsletters from other bay area cycling clubs and scan them for secrets of their success. For instance, I found that one bay area club has a trademark lawyer who is working on securing a Cinderella patent/trademark. And, another local club acknowledged the safety value of wearing helmets. While I found both of these observations interesting, neither will likely generate much interest for FFBC members at this time. The safety value of wearing helmets was recognized long ago thus requiring that helmets be worn on all club rides and, we have no particular need to secure a trademark for Cinderella. However, there was one item that sparked my interest.
One particular bay area club has founded procedures and guidelines for determining allocations of club donations to bicycle-related non-profit organizations and causes. These guidelines are consistent with their club’s formal objectives as stated in their Bylaws, which, in their case is to “provide cyclists with a variety of challenging bicycle-riding experiences and to promote safe bicycle riding and touring.”
As it now stands, FFBC has no such procedures and guidelines and make donations on an inconsistent and more or less willy-nilly fashion. I would love to see a committee formed who could write guidelines and procedures for making donations in consideration of FFBC’s bylaws. A list of donations, based on these guidelines, could then be recommended by the committee and presented to the membership at large. These recommendations would be voted on by the entire membership during a club meeting.
I have downloaded an electronic copy of this club’s procedures and guidelines to be used as our model. A recommendation to charter a committee whose purpose is to establish policies and guidelines will be formally brought to the Board during the June Board meeting, and, depending on the outcome, will be brought to the general membership during the June meeting along with a request for a chairperson and volunteers.
Century season has certainly gotten underway in a big way in the Bay Area. Many FFBC jerseys were spotted during the Wine Country, Grizzley Peak, Tierra Bella and Strawberry Fields centuries. Congratulations to all who completed their first century.
Until next time, good riding, be safe and support your favorite bicycle club by volunteering to lead a ride.
