Join me for a favorite holiday ride--Palomares and Kilkare. To avoid ending the ride on Niles Canyon road, we'll start at the Sunol School on Min Street in Sunol, leaving promptly at 8:30, and riding down Niles Canyon, regrouping at the top of Palomares, Dublin Canyon, and Kilkare and making a rest stop at Foothill Park. There are no planned snack stops before a return to Sunol but some of us may chose to linger at the Sunol convience store for the required potato chip fix. As usual, B riders and a B ride leader are welcome. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:00 and 7:25 on the day of the ride.

Sat. Sept. 9 Intro to Brisk Series #2 – Niles to Alum Rock
8:15 AM 40 miles, 3 M-B
Attempt #2; For those who would like to explore the world of B-pace rides. This one will start closer to home for many of us, with a flatter course so we can try some pace lines in the 16-19 mph range. But it will still be a “no dawdling” ride so we can be done in a reasonable time. (Due to scheduling conflicts, I have to lead this one on a Saturday. Sorry, Sunday riders—maybe next time.) Today’s route will be simple enough, starting at the Downtown Niles Parking Lot. We’ll ride the rollers on Mission Blvd. and Paseo Padre on our way to Alum Rock Park, then turn around and head back on mostly the same roads. If you typically ride at “M” pace and are just not sure about trying a B-pace ride, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have.

Meet in Downtown Niles Parking Lot for a ride to Moraga via Palomares, Redwood and Pinehurst. We will drop down into Moraga for a lunch stop before heading back via San Ramon Blvd. and Foothill. There is quite a bit of climbing but we'll get most of it out of the way early. Come prepared with plenty of water, snacks and $ for lunch in Moraga. We'll have plenty of regroups to keep everyone together as this is an "M" paced ride. If a "B" paced leader is interested in sharing the lead, let me know.

FFBC Annual Picnic
Sun. Sept. 17 FFBC Picnic, Alum Rock Park
Where: Alum Rock Park, Big Bear Location
(Same as last year)
Who: All FFBC current club members
Food: Catered by Amarillo Willy's
Price: $5.00/person
We need an accurate count for the caterers no later than September 10. Any FFBC Board member will be available to collect your $5 admission fee during or prior to the September club meeting. Please reply to Karen at the email address below and let her know if you plan to attend, including how many in your family.
Karen White (510) 475-0746; kkwh@pacbell.net

If you plan to arrive by car, there will be a vehicle entry fee (I believe it is $5 or $6). However, two of the three club rides will ride to and from the park, returning to their starting point after lunch. One is a family fun ride for those with riding kids. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with all your FFBC cycling buddies while enjoying a wonderful meal catered by Amarillo Willy's. The BBQ will be served at 1:00.

Below are the rides on Sunday Sept 17, all associated with the picnic.

Sun. Sept. 17 Alum Rock to Mt. Hamilton
8:30 AM 44 miles, 5 M-B-F
Let’s get up Mt. Hamilton one more time while there’s still some summer left. The pace is really for the flats, and as most of you know there won’t be a lot of flat on this ride. We’ll start at the parking lot near the picnic location at Big Bear in Alum Rock Park. (Don’t forget that there is a fee for vehicles entering the park.) Mike and Matt will co-lead at B-F and M-B paces respectively. This is an out and back so slower riders can do part distance if desired. Riders should turn around early enough to get back to the park for lunch starting at about 1:00 PM.
B-F Pace; Mike Williams (510) 475-7215, cell (510) 364-4335, passline@bigfoot.com
M-B Pace; Matt McGrane, (510) 794-6286, statboy@aol.com

Sun. Sept. 17 REI to Picnic & Back to REI
8:45 A.M. 35-40 miles, 4M
This is the same route we used last year. For those that did it last year, you know that Clayton road is a challenge, but not terrible. For those who have never ridden Clayton Rd., it is a quiet rural road that starts in San Jose and ends at Mt. Hamilton Rd., just above Miguelito (the road we take to get to the picnic). Meet at the REI on Auto Mall Pky. and Fremont Blvd . BONUS!-- The manager has offered to open the store early for our convenience; water, restroom, forgotten shoes? Please park away from the store entrance. The stated mileage includes the ride back to REI after the picnic. We will keep the pace consistent with an "M" pace so there will be no need to worry about being dropped. Bring plenty of water and a snack or two to sustain you until the great food at the picnic.
Jim Herman (510) 790-9044; jdherman@earthlink.net

Sun. Sept. 17 Family Fun Ride
11:15 AM 20-22 miles, 2 L-T
Come join me and my family as we ride to the FFBC picnic in Alum Rock Park. We will start at Milpitas Sports Center on Calaveras Blvd. and make our way at a leisurely pace along the rolling hills to join everyone for lunch. We will ride back to the start after the picnic. Directions to Milpitas Sports Center (formerly Samuel Ayer High School): Go east on Calaveras (237), under 680. Cross Park Victoria, and make an immediate left turn into the parking lot. We meet at the Calaveras end of the parking lot.

Sat, Sept 23 Metric a Month # 9 - Mines Road
8:00 AM 100K 5 M & 5 B
If you've kept up with the Metric a Month series, you're ready for Mines Road! We'll start at Albertson's in Livermore at the intersection of Concannon and Holmes. Then, it's an out to the Junction and back on Mines Road, stopping at the Junction for a snack break (but be prepared and be self-sufficient with food and water for the entire ride--the Junction's schedule can be quirky and, although the fire house across the street has accommodated our water needs in the past, there's no guarantee that it will continue to do so. If it's hot, this is a multi-bottle/multi-energy bar ride!). Rain or threat of rain cancels the ride--if unsure of the ride status, call us between 6:00 & 6:30AM the day of the ride.
