Race Team Rides
Ladies and Gentlemen
The Race Team will be riding every weekend of the Autumn and Winter season and the rides throughout October are open to All team and CLUB members, plus invited guests. If you’re interested in joining us, please do so. Our October rides will be non combative and regulated (well, mostly) and are a good introduction for club riders to see how the Race Team rides.

Race Team Ride #1
Our first team ride of the season, on roads where we can do an easy spin and practice some rotating pacelines. To the bottom of the Calaveras climb and then Pleasanton and Sunol.
All race team members are requested to wear their team uniform. Rain will stop play. No stopping, no dropping.
Start from the Niles Parking Lot
Garry Birch (925) 556-1564 or (510) 438-9632

Meet at Newark Java in the Raley’s shopping center at Jarvis & Newark Blvd.

Mon. Oct. 2 Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM 1-2 M, 25 to 38 miles
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage
at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30. Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Tues. Oct. 3 Coffee in Alameda
9:00 AM 55 miles, 1 M
Starting from the Bike Garage, we are riding up to Alameda to enjoy coffee overlooking San Francisco Bay. Both the rides up and back are flat and go by different routes so it is not just an out and back. For those looking for a slightly shorter ride and are comfortable following a route sheet, you can bail to BART. Bring $$ for Coffee / Lunch and if you choose, BART fare.

Tues. Oct. 3 Grant Park and Back
9:00 AM 45 miles, 4 M
For all you retirees, stay-at-home parents or employees with vacation days to use before the end of the year, let's meet at REI for a warm-up trip to Grant Park. I'm beginning to worry a bit about my October 14 ride to the top of Mt. Hamilton and could use a little saddle time to help beat my extreme trepidation and concern. We will make a stop at the Coffee Cup on McKee at Toyon so bring $$. Otherwise bring your climbing gears, plenty of water, snacks for the turnaround and a strong will to succeed.

Sat., October 7 Morgan Territory Redux
8:00 AM 73 miles, 5B
As many of you know, this ride didn’t exactly work out the way I planned it in May. The club has still not ridden Morgan Territory Road this year, and I have some unfinished business with certain San Ramon fauna. But seriously, folks, I recommend this ride as a good warmup if you are planning to tackle the Mt. Hamilton loop the following week.
Let's meet at the Pleasanton Park and Ride (Stoneridge and Johnson Dr, first light after turning right on the Stoneridge exit off 680 North). As originally planned, we’ll take the Diablo route (to the ranger station, not the top!) to get to Morgan Territory Road. We’ll have the typical summit regroups and a quick stop in Clayton, but nothing sitting down.
This ride will finish!!!

3rd Week in OCTOBER

Sat. Oct. 14 Brad’s Birthday Ride: Mt. Hamilton Century
7:00 AM 110 miles, 5B
The always popular Mt. Hamilton Loop returns to the calendar for 2006! Although Brad is not leading the ride this year, he will still play an important part. He has once again offered his house (575 Pickering Ave, Fremont ) as the start/finish, and he will also provide limited SAG support, in addition to serving as the official ride photographer. As this tends to be a well-attended ride (typically 20-25 riders), and no one besides Brad is yet slated for SAG, please plan ahead as usual, as Brad will not be able to be everywhere, or be able to carry all of every rider’s extra stuff!
For the uninitiated, the ride is a loop running south from Fremont, up and over Mt. Hamilton and through the San Antonio Valley before it turns north to Livermore, then west back to Fremont. It’s a fun, challenging—and long—day in the saddle, with roughly 7000-8000 feet of climbing, depending on whose altimeter you rely on. If you haven’t ridden a century before (or at least one with this much climbing), this is not exactly a “beginners” ride, but century rookies have finished it before. Don’t hesitate to contact the ride leader if you have any questions

Sat. Oct. 14 Mt Hamilton to the Top
7:00 AM, 75-80 miles, 5B
For those of us that can't do the whole ride, I will lead an out and back the day of the century. We will start with the century riders (see that listing for details ) and ride with them to the top of Mt Ham. After a brief regroup at the top, we will wish them all a great ride and head back down. We will regroup again at the bottom for our return to Fremont. Be sure to bring food or $ to buy food at the observatory.
Dan Amaral; c: 510-774-9683; danamaral@earthlink.net

Sat. Oct. 14 Mt. Hamilton to the Top
8:30 AM 65 Miles, 5M
Meet at the Longs shopping center (Northeast corner of Mission Blvd. and Warm Springs Blvd.) for a moderate paced ride to the top of Mt. Hamilton and back. The weather will soon be changing so let's get in a trip to the top before winter sets in. Bring plenty of water, snacks and a bike with good climbing gears. Be prepared for approximately 5,000 feet of climbing. Come prepared for changeable weather conditions when you reach the top but generally October is the best month for a trip up Mt. Hamilton. Water, bathrooms and vending machines await us at the top and we will make a lunch stop after descending so come prepared with $$. Everyone climbs at their own pace but we will have frequent regroups to justify calling this an "M" paced ride and to keep the ride leader within shouting distance.
