FFBC Ride Leaders Tribute
By Wei Sun
The Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club
To which we are, as the spokes to a hub:
We gather, ride and share this wondrous pleasure,
Taking a spin at our own pace and leisure.
Riders are many, yet ride leaders few;
I hope to pay them tribute that is due.
Ron Mitchell would announce, when each month ended,
Requesting volunteers these rides depended.
Without a hitch and never a delay
He'd list each ride and its appointed day.
Beginning Mondays met a hearty group
Seeking recov'ry by riding a loop.
That's long 'nough for their legs to loosen up;
The pace, just right, was set by Mike Northrup.
We then with Tony traveled back in time,
Up Calaveras' wall we'd slowly climb.
Again he led in the other direction;
The long ascent gave us time for reflection.
Karen and Jim, they're a majestic pair,
At times apart, more oft a tandem share.
From Gazos Creek would Karen start a ride
At Pescadero's beautiful seaside.
By beach, through woods and then up Haskin's Hill
We rode the course back to Gazos Creek Grill.
And Garry Birch, the racing team's head master,
Was keen to train his troops to ride e'er faster;
With Richard Brock ie, both arranged the Crit.
Jolly good show! T'was Fremont's biggest hit.
Early this year, Mike Williams was on crutches:
A hapless vermin put him in death's clutches.
When he recovered, Mike did lead a series
Designed to answer all our brisk pace queries.
Then he and James Li led a peloton;
Honoring Brad, they climbed Mt. Hamilton.
Some brisk pace rides, led by Dan Amaral,
Indeed were fast, but not a free-for-all.
From what I've heard, one must be just as quick,
Not to get dropped on rides led by Kim Wik.
Al Quintana would chair the Friday rides
That rambled along the East Bay's hillsides
In truth no rides would be, if none would lead;
And so I thank you for your selfless deed.
Each hill I climb, it's by your inspiration;
Each mile I ride, it's in your celebration.
