December 2006 Ride Calendar

Calendar Guide

Different bike clubs use different methods for ride leaders to convey information about their rides so that interested riders can determine if a ride is suited for them. Our definition of ride pace has not been published since we went to the electronic newsletter format. I have included it in the paragraph below, since there has been much confusion and disagreement about what actually constitutes the different pace rides. Also below, you will find the ride classification table found on our web page.

Ride leaders should not feel restricted by the designations. If they want to customize the pace, they can for example, write “B+” pace to indicate they will be getting into the high end of B and into some F perhaps. Or the leader could write “My” B pace, if he/she has led enough rides that riders know how their rides usually go. Or, you could write M/B, to indicate somewhere between an M ride and a B ride.

Pace Definition:

Rides are classified according to terrain and pace. Terrain is described in terms of local roads. Pace is defined by the riding speed on flat ground in calm air when not drafting. Average pace will be lower and will vary with terrain and other conditions.

Sat. Dec. 9  Palomares Loop-My Way (Attempt #2)
8:45 AM  35 miles, 5 B
This ride got rained out in November, but I’m stubborn.  Starting at the Niles Parking Lot, we’ll head up Mission Blvd. and work our way through the Hayward Hills to get to the back side of Palomares.  There should be about 2500 feet of climbing, unless they made Harder Road flatter this year.   We will have one regroup at each summit.  The goal is to be done by noon; we finished by 11:30 last year, but I’m changing the pace to “B” from “B-F,” because I just feel slower.

JANUARY PREVIEWS

Cinderella Training Rides

Cinderella Training Ride Series: This series of training rides put on by the Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club trains women for the Cinderella Classic Metric Century, an all women's event held in late March and run by the Valley Spokesmen club.

The orientation and rodeo will be held Saturday, January 13th 8:00-11:00am at the Harbor Light Church across the street from the Bicycle Garage.

The traditional volunteer ride will follow at 12:00pm.

This is a great way to improve your stamina and skill in a woman friendly environment. Look for more details in the January calendar.

Bonnie Kellogg (510/760-7207 dawomz@oddster.com) and her team are looking for additional volunteers to help in this training series so if you have enjoyed these in the past and are ready to help in any capacity, Bonnie would love to hear from you.

Progressive Ride Series

This popular training series will continue in mid January on each Sunday, and culminate with the worker’s ride of the Primavera century route a week before the actual Primavera.

This training series will be geared for moderate riders who have never done a century and all other riders who feel they need conditioning to do that first century of the season. More details to follow in the January newsletter.
