December 2006 Ride Calendar

Calendar Guide

The Progressive Ride Series continues this month. The PRS is intended to help club members get prepared to complete a century ride. The rides are progressive in mileage as well as elevation gain, and also give the participants a variety of different rides. The series will continue through March and into April, culminating with the worker’s ride of our own Primavera century route.

This year there are many different ride leaders, and hopefully this will add to the variety. The ride leaders are encouraged to maintain the ride paces as listed in the newsletter. The pace guidelines can be found on the club website. Thank you to all  the volunteer ride leaders! And good luck to all who hope to do their first century this year.

Sat. Feb. 10 TOC Stage 3 Preview, Part 1
9:00 AM   ~60 miles, 5B
Once again the Tour of California is coming to town, and since the preview rides from last year were so well received, Dan and I decided to lead them again, covering most of this year's Stage 3 over successive Saturdays. This year's East Bay stage starts in Stockton, and I don't think BART goes out that far yet, so this one's a driver--but only to Livermore. Let's start at the Albertsons parking lot at the NW corner of Holmes and Concannon.  From there, we can take Altamont Pass Road (a fast stretch, if the wind is right) on our way out as far as the north side of Tracy, where we will join the official tour route up and over Patterson Pass to get back to Livermore. I plan to have one or two regroups and one BRIEF rest/bathroom stop in Tracy, but otherwise no-dawdling rules apply.

Sat. Feb 17 Grant Ranch via Clayton Road
8:30 AM 42 miles, 4 M-B
Clayton Road is one of several access roads that connect to Mt. Hamilton Rd.  It's a 5 mile road beginning in the East San Jose foothills with a nice climb through some scenic territory and packing one short section with about an 8% grade.  Once we arrive at the park, the off-the-front riders in the group are invited to test themselves on the short (1 mile or so) but sweet eastern side of Quimby Road -- an up to the summit and back option.  On the way back home we'll probably stop somewhere for a quick coffee break.  Start from Albertson's on Mission Blvd. and Warm Springs.

Sat. Feb. 17 TOC Stage 3 Preview, Part 2

This ride will be the same as last year's Part 2.  We will begin in Niles and warm up on Calaveras.  Then after the descent, we will make the ominous left turn at the bottom and head over to the beast that is Sierra Rd.  After last year's TOC, this Cat 1 climb even has the respect of the Pro Peloton. After a regroup at the top, we will blaze down Felter/Calaveras and head home.  Total climbing for the day will be approx 4000'.  This is a "No Dawdling" ride; We will have several regroups, but no extended stops.  Be sure to bring something warm for the long and probably cold descent.
