April 2006 Ride Calendar

Calendar Guide

This month is highlighted with the Primavera Worker’s Ride on the 15th, and of course, the Primavera itself on the 22nd. Lets all hope, and work for a memorial and enjoyable ride for our guests who normally don’t get a chance to ride on our local roads; after all, we want them back next year for another successful Primavera. If you haven’t yet volunteered for a job, it’s not too late. Contact Karen White, volunteer coordinator, so you can do your part.

The popular Pizza Rides start next month, and continue through September. However, without ride leaders for them, they will not occur. Contact me to lead a month’s worth of Pizza Rides now. If you have never led a Pizza Ride, you don’t know what you’re missing! You get the admiration and respect of fellow riders, 4-5 ride leader credits, and the occasional leftover pizza to take home! There are plenty of established route sheets floating around for most of the local pizza parlors that you can use. Or you can make your own new routes, which will give you perpetual fame in the club.

There is a helpful document on the website that gives many tips for leading a Pizza Ride.(home>club forms>pizza ride coordinator) If you have never led one, take a look at it, and/or give me a call.

Here are the months that need Pizza Ride leaders:

We'll meet at Newark Java for a trip over the bridge and will head out to ride the Cinderella Ride #6, the Peninsula ride.  This is a good introduction to hills as we will have about 1,490 feet and will include Arastradero, Purissima with a trip back into Menlo Park for a coffee stop prior to heading back out for a trip up Manzanita and Whiskey Hill.
Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks and $ for the coffee stop.  This is a great ride for Cinderella trainees who can maintain an "M" pace and are not intimidated by a bit of hill climbing.  Plan on enough regroups to keep us all together for the duration.

Members and their families only on this ride. This is the final ride of the progressive ride series and it has two functions. We will meet at Logan High School parking lot, Union City, Paseo Padre and H Street. Meet at the far corner of the parking lot away from the high school.
Be self-sufficient. These rides are the full length Primavera routes, but without the staffed rest stops. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Suggestions may be given as to where to stop for supplies.
If there are any minors planning on doing any of these rides, remember that a Minor Release form must be filled out and given to the ride leader, and any rider under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The form can be found on our website under club forms.

This route is a bit of a challenge so hope you all have been getting in a few hills since GAWH #1.  Cinderella trainees who are able to maintain an "M" pace and are not intimidated by a bit of climbing should have a great day.  We will plan enough regroups to keep the group together.  Bring plenty of water, snacks and $ for a coffee stop on Hayward Blvd. before dropping back into the flat lands of South Hayward.
Karen White (510) 475-0746 - kkwh@pacbell.net

Sat. April 28  Wrangling the Junction Café
9:00 AM  62 miles, 5 “B-lite”
Time again to visit the Junction Café, a watering hole outpost located high up on Mines Rd. where it's not uncommon to find a curious mix of cowboys, bikers, and cyclists.  There’s 4,000 ft of climbing round trip, so this ain’t no city-slicker dude ranch ride, pardner, so you best be packing your climbing gears.  Bring a full complement of snacks in case for some reason the café is unexpectedly closed (it’s happened) or opens late, but if open and it should be, please buy something – water, coffee, shots of whiskey – since as you know we will all use their restrooms and we want to keep things friendly with the locals. Meet at Albertson's located on the NW corner of Holmes & Concannon in Livermore.  Our Primavera route goes by this location, so it should be familiar to most.  Directions from Fremont:  From Hwy 680 go east on E. Vallecitos (Hwy 84) which turns into Holmes.  Turn left on Concannon, Albertson’s is on the corner.
Brad Baldwin (510) 795-7065   bradlans@aol.com

Sun. Apr. 29  Death Ride Training #1: Hamilton/Sierra
8:00 AM   80 miles, 5B
Now that the Primavera is over, it’s time to build on that training and take your endurance to the next level!  If you’re doing the Death Ride this year…or you’re just looking for a challenge this weekend and have nothing better to do, then this ride’s for you.  It’s an easier (yes, easier) version of Judy Delogne’s training ride from three years ago--I removed the climb up Quimby; it’s only April, after all.  But don’t worry, there are still three “passes” to keep you entertained:  both sides of Mt. Hamilton, followed by the now world famous Sierra Rd. climb, and ending with the rollers on Felter to get us back to Fremont.  We should have about 9-10K feet of climbing by the end.  If you think this is a tough ride…well, yeah, it is.  But consider that the Death Ride has about 50 more miles and at least 4,000 more feet, and it’s all at altitude.  So it’s all relative, right?  I hope to see all of your bright, shining faces at the Longs in Warm Springs!  (You wouldn’t leave me to ride all this by myself, would you?  Anyone???)
Mike Williams, (510) 475-7215, cell (510) 364-4335, passline@bigfoot.com

Sun, April 29  Show and Go
8:30 AM  20-50 miles, 1-5 L-M-B
