SPECIAL HAPPENINGS

FFBC Race Team Criterium, June 30th, 2007
Garry Birch is requesting volunteers to assist the Race Team. The jobs that need help will be corner marshal, registration, bike wheel pits, set up and tear down. The are others like first aid, club sales, photographer. Same great location as last year.
Invite your friends to come watch the race. It's the only Crit with a hairpin turn! The children race at noon, so c'mon down and have some fun with us.

Pay it Forward; Memoirs of a Cinderella Sweep, by Judy Young
I’ve been participating in the Cinderella training ride series since 2002. Since I’m always the last rider in any group, I usually ride with the sweep—the person that makes sure the last person in the group makes it back in one piece.
This year, I’m paying it forward. I am the sweep for the Baby Pinks---first time cyclists and women whose New Year’s resolution was to get in shape.
Being a sweep to ‘virgin’ cyclists is challenging yet rewarding. I never realized how much I have learned in the past five years. Each participant has an eagerness to learn, a certain level of frustration and a feeling of accomplishment—all the same feelings I once had being a newbie.
Patience is a requirement, especially when riding with this group. Many rides required me to ride 7 MPH, even on the flat roads. I had to walk a panicked rider part way down a hill and walk several miles up Calaveras Road. Each time, I helped, the rider was so appreciative. I tell them, I’ve been there, no problem.
I always thought sweeping would be a piece of cake. I’ll just hide in the back. I never realized it was just as hard as being the lead. When the ride seems never ending, I tell myself I’m paying it forward. Someone was there for me!
