May 2006 Ride Calendar

WEDNESDAY EVENING PIZZA RIDE

Jeff can only commit to three of the Wednesdays to lead the Pizza Rides. The dates are May 9, 16, and 23. Also, Kim Wik has volunteered to host the May 30 Pizza Ride. Make sure to check the calendar before heading out to do a pizza ride.

Join Jeff Girard and Kim Wik as they host the popular Wednesday evening Pizza Rides. For the month of May, the pizza rides will meet at Mission Pizza, located at 1572 Washington Blvd, Fremont, (510) 651-6858. This is the plaza on Washington between Paseo Padre Pkwy and the Washington exit from Interstate 680. Please park at the rear of the shopping complex rather than in front of the pizza parlor as this space is shared. As always, there will be two routes; a longer more challenging ride, and a shorter flatter ride. The rides meet at 6:00 PM for sign in to be completed by 6:10. When signing in, remember to check “YES” or “NO” on the sign in sheet for pizza so we have an accurate head count on who is staying after the ride. The pizza order is placed before we depart. Departure time is 6:15pm sharp. The cost is $5.00 per person and that includes three pieces of pizza and a soda per rider.

Note: The Pizza Rides are designed as a work out. Meaning that these rides are not your traditional club led rides. A route sheet will be provided but the ride leader does not "lead" the ride like our traditional rides (i.e. the ride leader does not sweep the ride). We suggest rider’s pair up with another of similar abilities.

Look at the calendar, Jeff has also listed two rides starting at Lake Tahoe. Should be great rides for those who can make the trip. Call him if you have questions or need directions.

Sat. May 5  Getting Acquainted w/Hills (#1 Repeat)
8:30 AM  55 miles, 3M
We'll meet at Newark Java for a trip over the bridge before heading out to complete Cinderella Ride #6, the Peninsula ride.  This ride was aborted in April due to a nasty rain shower.  This is a good introduction to hills as our total altitude gain will be about 1,500 feet and will include Arastradero, Purissima before heading back into Menlo Park for a coffee stop.  After our stop we will head back out for a trip up Manzanita and Whiskey Hill.  Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks and $ for our stop.  This is a great ride for Cinderella graduates who can maintain an "M" pace and are not intimidated by a bit of climbing.  Plan on enough regroups to keep us together for the duration.

Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30.   Elevation gain is 465 feet.  Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Sun., May 13  Death Ride Training #2
Mt. Diablo and Morgan Territory
8:00 AM  80 miles, 5B
Today marks the anniversary of the ride where I was attacked by a pack of mountain lions (did I mention that there were more than one?)…so naturally I want to go back to the scene of the crime.  In past years I’ve led this ride up Mt. Diablo as far as the ranger station, but this time I’d like to add another “pass” by taking us all the way to the summit before heading to Morgan Territory Road for the second big climb of the day.  I’m guessing total climb for the ride will be 8,000 ft.

Like with my April training ride, I think this would be another good one for Sierra/Sequoia/Death Ride trainees or those who just want a challenging ride.  Let's meet at the Pleasanton Park and Ride (Stoneridge and Johnson Dr, first light after turning right on the Stoneridge exit off 680 North).  We’ll have the typical summit regroups and a lunch stop (to be determined).

It will be a good, quick workout and very little traffic to deal with.  Total climbing should be around 3000 ft.  Normal regroups, No Dawdling rules apply.  We should be back around 11:30.  I have water and bathroom available, and a refrigerator if you want something cold after the ride.  Rain or serious threat of rain cancels.
