June 2007 Ride Calendar
June is here and there are a lot of choices between club rides and centuries. Hope everyone gets in their personal quota of miles and that the weather cooperates with all of this month’s listed rides
The main event of the month is the FFBC Race Team’s criterium being held for the second year in a row in downtown Fremont. Last year’s race was a huge success, and this year should draw another great field of racers. A great way to watch this event is to volunteer as a club member to help in any of the various jobs that need to be done to make the event successful.
Jason, and all of the race team will be very grateful for anyone’s help. I’m sure Jason will be soliciting volunteers in the coming weeks for volunteers, so keep a watch for emails, etc., and try to attend the club meeting on Thursday June 7 for more race info and volunteer opportunities.
If you enjoy the Pizza rides in June, consider leading them in one of the following months of July, August, or September.
WEDNESDAY EVENING PIZZA RIDE
Join Brad and Debbie Baldwin as they host the popular Wednesday evening Pizza Rides. For the month of June, the pizza rides will meet at The Pizza Patio, located at 3395 Walnut Ave, Fremont, (510) 790-1166. Please park away from the Pizza Patio, as this space is shared. As always, there will be two routes; a longer more challenging ride, and a shorter flatter ride. The rides meet at 6:00 PM for sign in to be completed by 6:10. When signing in, remember to check “YES” or “NO” on the sign in sheet for pizza so we have an accurate head count on who is staying after the ride. The pizza order is placed before we depart. Departure time is 6:15pm sharp. The cost is $5.00 per person and that includes three pieces of pizza and a soda per rider.
Note: The Pizza are not your traditional club led rides. A route sheet will be provided but the ride leader does not "lead" the ride like our traditional rides (i.e. the ride leader does not sweep the ride). We suggest rider’s pair up with another of similar abilities

Sun. June. 3 Coffee in Alameda, BART return
9:00 AM 40 miles, 1 M
Starting from the Bike Garage, we are riding up to Alameda to enjoy coffee overlooking San Francisco Bay, with a view of "the city". This is a flat ride up with a return on BART from the Fruitvale Station. Bring $$ for Coffee / Lunch and, BART fare. The ride leader expects to be returning via BART, however the route sheet will include a riding route back if a sub-group wants to get ambitious and elect a co-leader. We will have frequent regroups, and this ride has lots of water views in the later stages.

Mon. June 4 Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM 1-2 M, 25 to 38 miles
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30. Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

9:00 AM 20-40 miles, 2-3 M (flats)
Come ride with a fun, welcoming group. We meet at Newark Java in the Raley's shopping center parking lot to decide our destination. Sometimes we just go to Union City via Nike Hill. More often, we cross the bridge and ride to Shoreline, Robert's Market,do "Margaret's Ride", or we get adventurous and find new routes. There are no routesheets so we regroup as necessary. Our coffee stop is a priority and we sit down and eat a quick sandwich or pastry so remember to bring money. No one is left behind and faster riders are welcome to head back early.

Sun. June 17 Alum Rock
8:30 AM 35 miles, 3 M/B
This M/B ride will be only slightly faster than an M ride, definitely not a B pace. The main difference on this ride from an M ride is that there will be fewer and shorter regroups. Also, the coffee stop will be at the end of the ride at Mission Coffee, so those who want to get home quicker can opt out. We will meet at Mission Coffee and follow our usual route to the park and return with a climb up to inspiration point and then up Miguelito to Mt. Hamilton road for a nice descent to start our return trip.

Sat. June 23 Massacre at Wounded Knee VII
7:30 AM 84 miles, 5-B
It’s back! After taking a break in 2006, the infamous “Wounded Knee” ride returns for its seventh running. We’ll first meander through Pleasanton and Livermore, and then the fun begins on the wickedly fast Altamont Pass Rd. Our lunch stop is out in the boonies, so bring $$. The ride returns on the deceptively tough Patterson Pass Rd., where this year’s Amgen pros disrespected out turf by making it look so easy. Yeah, let’s see them do this in June! Total climbing is 4,900 ft. As always, we’ll pause for a minute at the top of Patterson to honor and reflect upon those heroic past riders that have endured bodily pain, missed turns, broken bikes, and suffered in the heat like dogs on this same journey. We’ll depart early from Niles parking lot to avoid some but not all of the heat.
