FROM THE SUMMIT
When you meet a new cyclist, do you look at the ground when they ask you if you belong to a bicycle club? Do you prefer cycling alone to riding with others? Would you rather wear a jersey from a century you participated in to one bearing your cycling club name and logo? Are you a member of a local bicycle club principally so you will qualify for the 10 percent discount from a number of local bicycle shops? Stop reading for a minute and consider the question “Why do I belong to a bicycle club?”
The answer you reach when thinking of these questions will determine the direction of the Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club. FFBC’s current membership exceeds 400 members and I dare to say that these questions are likely to produce over 400 different answer combinations.
Over the last several weeks FFBC’s appointed Nominations Committee has been holding meetings with their primary goal to find Board of Director replacements for those members wishing to vacate their board positions. In addition to the board positions being vacated, several non-board positions have needed to be filled, I.E., newsletter editor, equipment manager, Primavera co-chairs and Cinderella chair. All positions have found willing volunteers except Cinderella chair and president. Now, I can understand having trouble filling the Cinderella chair position because this job requires excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. The position of president, however, can be filled by someone with mediocre organizational skills and reasonably good interpersonal skills. In addition, the Cinderella chair requires a reasonably heavy commitment of time and energy while the position for president requires someone who will preside over two monthly meetings, adhere to FFBC’s Constitution and By Laws and appoint volunteers to the Nominations Committee when it is time to locate a new board.
I imagine otherwise willing volunteers fear being the “go to” person when a thorny issue surfaces. However, the tone of the membership, interesting programs and the direction in which the club will go is determined by the entire Board of Directors not the president alone.
With that said, if you believe FFBC should head in a particular direction or if you fear the club is becoming stagnant and/or you are no longer able to wear your club jersey with pride, step up and volunteer to serve as president and help FFBC make the changes necessary to achieve a cycling club you are proud to call your club. Contact a Nominations Committee member today and make a difference!
See you on the road.
