September 2007 Ride Calendar
FFBC ANNUAL PICNIC
Reserve Sunday, Sept. 16 on your calendar for our annual picnic. As we have in the past, we will combine some bike riding with socializing, and good food. A $5 fee is required to help cover the cost of the food and to get an accurate head count. Please RSVP to Karen White at 510-475-0746; kkwh@pacbell.net, by Sun., Sept.9
The picnic will be at a new location this year. It will be at the Oak Knoll picnic area in Ed Levin Park. Oak Knoll is about half way up Calaveras road, and just past Downing road on the right hand side. A catered lunch will be served at 1PM. Parking is available at $6 per car. More details of the picnic are elsewhere in this newsletter.
There are 4 rides planned to and from the picnic. See the ride schedule below for details.

Mon. Sep 3, Labor Day Palomares/Kilkare
8:15 AM 35 miles, 4-M 2400' ft.
Join me for a favorite holiday ride--Palomares and Kilkare. To avoid ending the ride on Niles Canyon Road, we'll start at the Sunol School on Main Street in Sunol, leaving promptly at 8:30, and riding down Niles Canyon, regrouping at the tops of Palomares and Kilkare, and making a rest stop at the top of Laurel Creek and/or Foothill Park. There are no planned snack stops before a return to Sunol but some of us may chose to linger at the Sunol convience store for the required potato chip fix after the ride. As usual, B riders and a B ride leader are welcome. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:00 and 7:25 on the day of the ride.

Thur. Sept 6 Thursday Morning Coffee Ride
9:00AM 20-40 miles, 2-3M (M+, flats)
Since the kids are starting school, we will adjust our meeting time a half-hour later to accommodate parents and increased traffic. Come ride with a fun, welcoming group. We meet at Newark Java in the Raley's shopping center parking lot. Sometimes we just go to Union City via Nike Hill. More often, we cross the bridge and ride to Shoreline, Robert's Market, do "Margaret's Ride", or we get adventurous and find new routes. There are no route sheets so we regroup as necessary. Our coffee stop is a priority and we sit down and eat a quick sandwich or pastry so remember to bring money. No one is left behind and faster riders are welcome to head back early.

2nd Week in SEPTEMBER
Sat. Sept. 8 Gary's Nightmare
9:00 AM 50-55 miles, 5M
After enduring this ride in 2005, Tony Flusche suggested the new name and Steve Wilson accurately described the terrain: "climb and climb and climb and climb and climb and climb and when it seems to start flattening out, we'll climb some more". If this sounds like your kind of ride, come out and enjoy 5000 feet of climbing. Meet at Monta Vista Park (Foothill and Voss Ave) in Cupertino. We'll wind our way up to Skyline, descend Kings Mountain into Woodside and return on Foothill. Bring $ for a stop at Roberts Market.
Directions: Take 280 to Cupertino, and take the Foothill Road South exit. Drive about 1.2 miles. Turn right on Voss Ave. Park on the street or in the parking lot on your right.
If you are interested in leading a B or F paced group on this route, please contact the ride leader.

Sat. Sept.8 Mt. Diablo "Challenge" #2
8:00 AM 50 miles, 5B
Just in case you didn’t beat your personal best last month, here’s your second chance! We'll start at the Pleasanton Park and Ride (Stoneridge and Johnson Dr, first light after turning right on the Stoneridge exit off 680 North). The idea will be to ride to the start of the climb together-at an easy pace--then head up the mountain at our own individual speeds. But don't burn yourself out completely on the climb, because we will have to ride back (no hanging on to team cars!). No lunch/coffee stop planned, so be self-sufficient.

Sun. Sept. 9 FFBC “Get-To-Know-Us-Ride”
9:00 AM 20-25 miles, 1-2 L-T-M
Please join us on this monthly “Get-To-Know-Us-Ride”. This casual, social ride is always fun and offers everyone the chance to meet other cyclists. Bring your cycling friends along and help us introduce newcomers and guests to the club. Meet at Newark Java in the Raley’s shopping center at Jarvis & Newark Blvd., for a ride through the Fremont area. Don’t forget $$ for a coffee/snack stop. If you have a club jersey or jacket, this is a great time to wear it.
Ron Mitchell; 510-792-7219, ron_m_ffwbc@sbcglobal.net
Sun. Sept. 9 Moody/Portola Valley
8:30 AM 55 Miles, 4M
Meet at Newark Java for a trip across the Dumbarton Bridge. We'll wind our way through Palo Alto and Menlo Park before heading out to Woodside for a trip up Moody before dropping down Page Mill and back for a lunch stop at Roberts Market. If you've never taken a ride up Moody, come prepared with plenty of water, snacks and low gears. Moody intersects with Page Mill so we will descend Page Mill back into town for our lunch stop. Bring $ for the lunch stop. We will regroup as often as necessary to keep this "M" paced ride together. (A faster paced ride leader is encouraged to join us.)
Karen White (510) 475-0746 kkwh@pacbell.net
Sun. Sept. 9 Reverse Primavera 100k route
8:30 AM 60 miles, 4 B
We'll start at the Downtown Niles Parking Lot and head over Palomares to Dublin-Canyon and Foothill. After a refueling stop at Sunol, it's on to Calaveras and then we'll work our way back to Fremont. Regroups at the top of the climbs.
Todd Tracy (408) 685-5470 todd.tracy@comcast.net
Mon. Sept. 10 Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM 1-2 M, 25 to 38 miles
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30. Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Thur. Sept. 13 Walt's Fourth Annual Happy Birthday Ride
9:00AM 20miles, 2M

Hopefully the "old regulars" will dust off their bikes and join us too. Bring money for coffee/ice cream.

4th Week in SEPTEMBER
Sat. Sept. 22 Corral Hollow & Patterson Pass
8:15 am 50-55 miles, 5 M/B, B
Ride starts in Livermore and does a counter-clockwise loop over two favorite wind-tunnel passes, Corral Hollow and Patterson. The descent on Corral Hollow is spectacularly fast and produces some blazingly quick pacelining opportunities. And yes Carrie, you will need to defend your newly acquired sprint hill won earlier this year. We'll make a quick refueling stop at the gas station market at the foot of Patterson. The climb up Patterson is always a challenge, and if the day is looking overly hot to handle the evil Patterson stair steps, there is always a bypass option that cuts over to Altamont via Midway. There might be a further option to add S. & N. Flynn roads to the route, which tacks on a bit more climbing and distance, TBD at the final summit. Meet at Albertson's, located on the NW corner of Holmes & Concannon in Livermore. Ride start time of 8:15 am is a compromise for an early start to beat the possible Livermore valley heat, and allowing extra time to get to the start.

We will have an early coffee stop in Castro Valley before tackling Palomares to get back.

Sun. Sept 23 Across The Bridge
8:15AM, M Ride 45-50 miles, 4 M
Meet at Newark Java. Let's begin our Sunday ride by crossing the DB bridge down Sandhill and Portola Valley Road. We will wind around Alpine to Arastadero. You will get a chance to climb a portion of Page Mill road before cutting over to Los Altos. We'll cruise around the quiet side of Los Altos heading toward the border of Mtn View. Just to make this ride challenging enough, we will climb back up Arastadero to Alpine and head back across the DB bridge. We'll stop for a snack somewhere along the way.
