October 2007 Ride Calendar

1st Week in OCTOBER

Mon. Oct. 1   Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM   1-2 M, 25 to 38 miles
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's relatively flat down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and decide whether to head straight back (for about 25 miles) or make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail (for about 38 miles). The shorter option will get us back before 11:30, the longer well before 12:30.   Elevation gain is 465 feet.  Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

I have bathroom and water available.  We’ll still have some daylight, but At least basic front & rear lights are needed for safety on the way back. Thur. Oct 4   Thursday Morning Coffee Ride
9:00AM     20-40 miles, 2-3M (M+, flats)
Come ride with a fun, welcoming group. We meet at Newark Java in the Raley's shopping center parking lot. Sometimes we just go to Union City via Nike Hill. More often, we cross the bridge and ride to Shoreline, Robert's Market, do "Margaret's Ride", or we get adventurous and find new routes. There are no route sheets so we regroup as necessary. We stop for coffee so  bring money. Faster riders are welcome to head back early.  Rain cancels, call if unsure.

8:00 AM    40 miles, 3 M and B
This is our traditional "1st Saturday of the Month" ride. We will meet in the Downtown Niles in the parking lot east of the usual parking lot and ride up Niles Canyon into Sunol then on to Calaveras. Our traditional route brings us out in Milpitas and we return via a route that stays close to the hills. There will be a ride leader for the pace(s) listed below.  Rain or a serious threat of rain cancels. Call me after 7am.

Hilly and Steep
Andy, Paul and I did most of this ride.  It was tough.  Up Mill Creek Rd, up the single track to Mission Peak 2517, to peak 2543, to Monument Peak 2594.  Water available along the way (at mp4 and) Eagle Spring camp (ot7).  We could go home or continue down to Ed Levin Park via Bay Area Ridge Trail and take the road home.  Meet at Mission Coffee parking lot, Washington Blvd at Mission Blv

Sun. Oct. 7    Climb to Skyline on Old La Honda
8:45 AM      55 miles, 4 M
Meet at Newark Java for a trip across the Dumbarton Bridge as we make our way to Old La Honda.  Old La Honda will afford us a wonderful opportunity to check our climbing ability as we meander up through this tree-laden, narrow road leading to Skyline.  After an opportunity to catch our breath, we’ll turn right towards Skylonda for a lunch stop across Skyline from Alice’s Restaurant and our descent on Hwy. 84.  Bring $ for lunch and plenty of water and snacks for the ascent.  We’ll keep this ride at a moderate pace by regrouping as necessary.  Rain or threat of rain will cancel.
Karen White – (510) 475-0746; kkwh@pacbell.net

Sun. Oct. 7     Oakland Hills
8:00 AM      64 miles, 4 B and B-lite
If you’re planning on riding Brad’s B-day Ride next Saturday, consider this a preparation ride. If not, just consider it a fun ride through the hills.  We will meet in Downtown Niles in the parking lot east of the usual parking lot (which is closed).  We will start out over Palomares and head down into Castro Valley. From there our trek will take us up Redwood Rd and then we’ll snake up Pinehurst.  A left on Skyline and soon we’ll be flying back down Redwood. After winding through Castro Valley, it will be back over Palomares and back to Niles. There will be several regroups and a water stop. No "coffee stop" is planned for the B-pace group, but one will be scheduled for the "B-lites," but in either case it's a good idea to bring food and $$ along. Rain or significant chance of rain cancels.  Call the morning of the ride if unsure.

Sat. Oct. 13    Brad’s B-Day Ride-6th Annual Mt. Ham. Loop
7:00 AM   110 miles, 7,700ft+ climbing, B-lite, B, F
Join us for our sixth annual ride to the top of Mt. Hamilton, a tour of the scenic San Antonio Valley and Mines Roads, and our visit to the remote Junction Café, a watering hole in the middle of nowhere.  As it isn’t easy for everyone to stay together for a ride this long, there is no set pace and no ride leaders.  Riders are invited to form their own ad-hoc ride groups and rest-stop schedules at the start or along the ride, much like any century.  All riders are expected to be fully self-sufficient in all ways whether or not we provide volunteer ride support. Bring $$ for the Café and enough water to get you through a 50 mile stretch of roads behind Mt. Hamilton in case the Café is not open.  We’ve been fortunate to have support the last several years, and if someone steps forward to help this time we’ll notify everyone on the club’s FFBC email list.  Non-FFBC members are allowed to join the ride, but please call Brad. Ride starts at my home at 575 Pickering Ave (between Mission Blvd and Canyon Heights) where we’ll have coffee in the morning and some refreshments waiting for us at the end of this very tough day!
