January 2008 Ride Calendar

Progressive Rides

This month, the club begins the 2008 Progressive Rides.  For those of you who may not be familiar with them, this is a series of rides aimed toward developing your endurance for completing a century ride this spring or summer.  It’s also a good series in which to jump up a level in riding endurance and/or speed even if you don’t plan to do century rides.  The series will start January 13 and culminate with the Primavera Worker's Ride on Saturday, April 12th, 2006.

There are a couple of changes to the setup for this year.  First off, the series builds on the assumption that you can ride the Calaveras loop.  You can check you’re ready by doing the First Saturday ride on January 6 or by joining me on January 7 to ride it counterclockwise.  The next few of weeks are harder than Calaveras, but effort put out early on should pay off later on when doing those epic rides.

The second change from the last few years is a direct result of starting early and using the Calaveras loop as a start: the rides increase gradually enough I won’t be slipping the schedule if a ride is rained out.  As an added advantage, you should also be able to miss a week here and there for illness or whatever reason and not have to drop out of the series.  Those of you just touching up your fitness can probably pick and choose what rides you want to attend.

If you can do these rides easily, whether it’s in the M or the B crowd or in between, please remember what I said above: these rides are also to help people make that jump to the next riding group.  Please be encouraging, supportive, and maybe a little patient.  I never think we have riding cliques, but small groups do develop their own style – this is a good time to share and teach it.  It can also be a good time to mix up your riding.  Don’t always ride off the front – maybe offer to ride at the back or in the middle and use the opportunity to make some new friends.

Conversely, those of you who may be slower (like me!), be ready to leave the start and rest stops on-time, ride smart, ask questions, and listen to any comments you’re given.  The other riders can tell you’re trying, and they’ve all been there before (maybe some distant time in the past, but at some time).   If you can get around Calaveras but the series looks challenging: yes the rides immediately get longer and harder, but they are doable.

And finally, if you can’t quite manage Calaveras yet but you’re motivated to do the series, you might manage to catch up if you work real hard for the next couple of weeks.  If you have thoughts of giving that a try, please give me a call.  If this is the first time you’ve trained hard on a bike, be sure to get advice from someone you know and trust – maybe talk to several people – on how to do it smartly.

Hope to see you out there!

Cinderella Rides

The Cinderella Rides are also starting this month. Registration is limited. They are designed to give beginning women rider’s the confidence and physical abilities to complete the Cinderella Metric Century in the spring.

SPORTS BASEMENT RIDES AND BARBECUE: Jan. 26 2008

The Sports Basement has again invited our club to start some rides from their store. It is always fun to do rides in new places. After the rides, there will be food, drink (adult and non-adult), shopping, with a 20% discount.

We did this last August and it was a big success, with a good turnout, with an abundant supply of great food and drink afterward. The race team will be there also, doing their ride a bit earlier and then joining us later for the relaxation.

Guests are welcome, and there is no charge to anyone. But they do need a head count, so an RSVP is needed if you plan on attending. Send your RSVP to me, Jim Herman, jdherman@earthlink.net, 510-790-9044. The RSVP’s are needed by Tuesday Jan.22.

The day is Saturday, Jan. 26. There are four rides listed. Route sheets will be provided. The start time for the rides is 9:00 AM. The food will probably be around12 or 1 PM, Ride leaders are welcome to lead the rides (see below). If there is not a ride leader designated by the time of the ride, do not fret. We will treat it as a show and go and designate a volunteer ride leader for that unfortunate orphan ride.

If you would like to lead one of these rides, it is not too late. You can volunteer to lead one right up until Jan. 25. Just let me know (Jim Herman 510-790-9044; jdherman@earthlink.net). I will send you a copy of the route sheet and a map so you can familiarize yourself with the route. Offers will be taken on a first come basis.

If one of the rides looks good to you, but you are unsure of the pace listed, come anyways, get a route sheet, and there will probably be others for you to enjoy the ride with

So, if you like to ride, eat, drink, and save money, all in the same day, come to the Sports Basement on the 26th! Guests are welcome, but to qualify for the 20% discount, you must be an FFBC club member.

Sun. Jan. 20    Progressive #2: The Reservoirs
9:00 AM   50 miles, 3M & B
Start at Community Park, Morgan Hill There aren’t many remote starts in the Progressive Series this year, but this ride is just too much fun to pass up and it happens to fit early in the series.  Another bump in miles over last week, but the climbs are easier.  Y’all might want look for a group to stick, because there’s some good opportunities during this ride to work on your pacelining.  From the start in Morgan Hill, we’ll go up into the hills to Chesboro reservoir before dropping back down to Coyote Valley.  After climbing Bailey Rd., the classic stretch along Calero and Uvas reservoirs leads us down to Gilroy for a coffee break (bring $).  The return to the start has some easy hills to round out the ride.
To get to the start, take 101 south to Tennant Ave.  Go west past Monterey Hwy (street name changes to Edmundson Ave.) and look for Morgan Hill Community Park on the right (just after the swim center).  Drive into the large (second) parking area. As a note, there’s coffee and food at the corner of Tennant and Monterey Hwy available before or after the ride.
