February 2008 Ride Calendar

February Progressive Rides

The 2008 Progressive Rides continue each Sunday in February.  For those of you who may not be familiar this series of club rides open to all; they’re just planned in a sequence for those of us working on developing endurance for completing a century ride this spring or summer, or for moving up to riding with the faster groups.  The series started January 13 and culminates with the Primavera Worker's Ride on Saturday, April 12th, 2006.

After last month’s warmups, this month we’re hitting our stride.  The ride at the end of the month is only 5 miles longer than the one at the beginning, but the amount and type of climbing will be getting harder and should have you prepared to face longer distances in March and April.

As a reminder, the Progressive Rides are not being rescheduled in case of rain.  Also, if you have scheduling conflicts or other intervening reasons, you should be able to skip a week without getting dropped too bad the following next week (provided you keep up your training during the week).

The ride continues on Hellyer Ave and onto the Coyote Creek bike trail to go under Hwy 101 and make our way to Metcalf. We climb up past the motorcycle park to the top of San Felipe, and then cruise past the eucalyptus trees down to a lunch stop at Le Boulange.  The ride continues back up to Ruby to Martens, and then returns on Clayton Road to Mt Hamilton, back down to Miguelito into Alum Rock Park.  Tierra Bella is NOT doing Metcalf this year, and has revised the route to go up Dunne Rd to Henry Coe State Park.

Sat. Feb. 2   LSD
8:30 AM sharp  90 miles
Race Team ride #34 – Champion Nutrition meet and greet. From Niles, it’s flat all the way to Concord to see where Champion Nutrition are located. On our return we go over Mt. Diablo via Northgate and then Make our way back to Fremont All race team members are requested to wear their team uniform. Rain will NOT stop play. No stopping, no dropping. Start from the Niles Parking Lot.

Sun. Feb. 3   Progressive #4.  Grant Park – Twin Gates.
8:30 AM   50 miles, 4-5M & B
Start at Longs.shop. ctr., Mission and Warm Springs. Blvd.
One thing you’ve got to admire about Mt. Hamilton Road: you don’t have to keep shifting gears – just pick a low one and keep grinding it out.   This ride is about the same length as the last two weeks and there aren’t any climbs as steep (OK, nothing as steep after you get done with Miguelito), but the day is about pacing yourself on climbs.
We’ll follow the usual route from Warm Springs to Alum Rock Park for a break and then head up the hill.  Take a break once you get to Grant Ranch Park, but don’t relax too much.  There’s one more climb, up to Twin Gates before you get to turn around.  We’ll stop for a break back down in San Jose (bring $) along the way back to Fremont.

Sat. Feb. 9   The Birds Revisited
8:30 AM     Low key ride, 25-30 miles 1 L.
In November we did the first The Birds Ride. Most of us learned a lot. For example my identification skills increased from being able to discriminate between birds and not-birds to ducks and not-ducks.
On our last ride we saw at least five different species of ducks (which Jean identified) several egrets of various kinds, at least two different species of sea gull, some hawks, some vultures, some pelicans and so on. So, please join us again to see what we can scare up.
We nearly froze to death on the last ride so remember to dress warmly, with lots of layers. And bring your camera and binoculars. (Real birders do that.)
We'll start at the same place as last time, The Niles Staging Area, and ride out to the end of the pavement along Alameda Creek. If the dirt trail is solid enough, we'll then ride over to the Dumbarton Bridge and then make our way back to The Niles Staging Area. We may stop for coffee somewhere along the way so bring money.
Rain closer than Mt. Fuji cancels.

Sun. Feb.10   Progressive #5--All of OLH.
8:30 AM   55 miles, 4 M & B
Start at Newark Java.
Time to turn some of the climbing from the last two weeks back into mileage.  And although the total elevation is down, some of it is steeper.  Over the Dumbarton and up into Portola Valley, then find your little gears for the climb up Old La Honda.  Today we descend the other side of OLH before turning up Hwy 84 to Sky Londa and the descent to Woodside.  We’ll take a break at Robert’s Market, (bring $), then scamper for home.  Once again, the Dumbarton/Marshlands stretch is a good opportunity to practice the time-trialing efforts and/or pacelining you’ll want to use on Century rides.
