FROM THE SUMMIT
The sun is out and shining brilliantly as I am writing this. Spring is here. The cherry blossoms outside my windows are in bloom and the smell of fresh cut grass is wafting through the open windows. I have collected the patio furniture missing after last months storms and am reflecting on some recent experiences.
The Tour of California rolled through surrounding towns last week. Promoters of the Tour are reporting that more than 1.6 million fans turned out to watch what was called, "the best field ever assembled on U.S. soil." From information I have gathered on club rides and the Yahoo! groups since the Tour, many of you were able to make it out to at least one stage. I have heard and read some epic stories of the prologue, climbing Sierra Road, an impromptu wheel change with Bobby Julich, and even some accounts of the finish in Pasadena. I myself had an unforgetible experience chasing down and photographing the Lion King, Mario Cipollini.
As many of you are aware, the big news in my household has been the birth of my daughter, Katherine Jane. It was, without a doubt, the most powerful experience of my life. I am proud to say that things have gone better than expected this first week thanks to the efforts of my fiancee, Chanda. I have even been on the bike a time or two. Katherine was able to make a "guest appearance" on Mike Northrup's Monday ride this week (I brought her in the car, of course). Like many other proud fathers, I spend most of my days making funny faces, taking pictures, and changing diapers. I wish to thank everyone who has sent cards, emails, sat through slideshows on my iPhone, and offered to babysit. I also want to apologize to Wei, who has been waiting for this message for the past couple of days. It seems like Katherine likes to eat and poop, often at the same time, when Daddy is writing...
Speaking of which....
Keep on riding,
