April 2008 Ride Calendar

This month is highlighted with the Primavera Worker’s Ride on the 12th, and of course, the Primavera itself on the 20th. Lets all hope, and work for a memorable and enjoyable ride for our guests who normally don’t get a chance to ride on our local roads; after all, we want them back next year for another successful Primavera. If you haven’t yet volunteered for a job, it’s not too late. Contact Karen White, volunteer coordinator, so you can do your part.

Pizza Rides

The popular Pizza Rides start next month, and continue through September. However, without ride leaders for them, they will not occur. Contact me to lead a month’s worth of Pizza Rides now. If you have never led a Pizza Ride, you don’t know what you’re missing! You get the admiration and respect of fellow riders, 4-5 ride leader credits, and the occasional leftover pizza to take home! There are plenty of established route sheets floating around for most of the local pizza parlors that you can use. Or you can make your own new routes, which will give you perpetual fame in the club. Get your reservation in as a Pizza Ride leader to me now—before all the opportunities are taken! I will gladly accept reservations for any month in advance.

There is a helpful document on the website that gives many tips for leading a Pizza Ride.(home>club forms>pizza ride coordinator) If you have never led one, take a look at it, and/or give me a call.

Here are the months that need Pizza Ride leaders:

May

June

July

Progressive Rides

The 2008 Progressive Rides conclude this month in time for the first local Century rides of the year.  For those of you who may not be familiar with this series, this is a series of rides aimed toward developing your endurance for completing a century ride this spring or summer.  It’s also a good series in which to jump up a level in riding endurance and/or speed even if  you don’t plan to do century rides.  The series started January 13 and culminates with the Primavera Worker's Ride on Saturday, April 12th, 2006

This month, we’re just icing the cake.  If you’ve done all the rides, you should feel pretty strong.  Hope you’ll come out and ride some of the epic possibilities we have available in the bay area, do some centuries, and even take turns leading rides.  Find your favorites.  Explore.

Wed. April 2     Wednesday Night Training Ride
5:45 PM      18-30 miles, 2-3 B+
Get ready for Summer and for Pizza Rides.  Come and join us for a mid-week ride. Route TBD at the start. Meet in front of my shop at 45405 #1 Industrial Place, Fremont. I have bathroom and water available. Since we have more daylight, we’ll push the distance up a bit.  This is still an evening ride and there will be traffic, so basic front & rear lights are needed for safety. Please email (preferred) or call if you're coming, so I know whom to expect. Rain or wet roads cancels, threat of rain does not. We'll just stay close if it's threatening.

Thur. April 3    Thursday Morning Coffee Ride
9:00 AM       20-40 miles, 2-3M
Come ride with a fun, welcoming group. We meet at Newark Java in the Raley's shopping center parking lot. Sometimes we just go to Union City via Nike Hill. More often, we cross the bridge and ride to Shoreline, Robert's Market, do "Margaret's Ride", or we get adventurous and find new routes. There are no route sheets so we regroup as necessary. We stop for coffee so bring money. Faster riders are welcome to head back early if they know the route. Rain cancels.

There will be a ride leader for the pace(s) listed below.  Rain or a serious threat of rain cancels. Call me after 7am.

We’ll cap this year’s series with the classic out to the coast and back.  Once you’ve done this, you’re ready for most any ride the club puts on.  The route out to the coast is over OLH to a break at San Gregorio.  The way back is via steep (but pretty!) Tunitas Creek and Kings Mtn.  Congrats to all, and bring on the 100 mile rides.

Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Sat. April 12        Primavera Worker’s Rides
Members and their families only on this ride. This is the final ride of the progressive ride series and it has two functions. First, allow those members working in support of the Primavera a chance to do the route, and second, to check the route marking, and route sheets for errors prior to the actual Primavera.IF YOU FIND ANY ERRORS ON THE ROAD MARKINGS OR THE ROUTE SHEET, MAKE A NOTE OF THEM AND CONTACT TODD TRACY—DO NOT CONTACT THE RACE TEAM DIRECTLY. We will meet at Logan High School parking lot, Union City, Paseo Padre and H Street. Meet at the far corner of the parking lot away from the high school.
Be self-sufficient. These rides are the full length Primavera routes, but without the staffed rest stops. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Suggestions may be given as to where to stop for supplies.

Although ride leaders are to be determined for some of the rides, these are intended as “self-paced” rides. There is no obligation to stay together as a complete group for the duration of the ride. Stick with someone that rides at your pace if you do not want to ride alone, and be self sufficient.

If there are any minors planning on doing any of these rides, remember that a Minor Release form must be filled out and given to the ride leader, and any rider under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The form can be found on our website under club forms.

Full Century Route
7:00 AM       100 miles, 5 M/B/F
Altamont Pass sandwiched in between Calaveras and Palomares.   OK, the Bernal Bump provides a little added spice.  There will be an opportunity to go off-route in Livermore for food as this can be a pretty long day and there’s no easy-to-access restroom stop out that far. Groups/individuals may break apart to ride at their own pace
Ride leaders TBD.

Metric Century
7:30 AM    65 miles (100 kilometers), 5 T/M/B/F
Our classic combination of Calaveras and Palomares.  There is an opportunity to get food in Sunol; other than that the stops are at parks and have water and restrooms only.  Groups/individuals may break apart to ride at their own pace
Ride leaders TBD.

Family Fun Ride
9:00 AM       25 miles, 2 T/M
A fairly flat through Fremont and Newark with a good portion of the Alameda Creek Trail included.
Ride leaders TBD

9:00 AM    20-25 miles, 1-2 L-T-M
Please join us on this monthly “Get-To-Know-Us-Ride”.  This casual, social ride is always fun and offers everyone the chance to meet other cyclists.  Bring your cycling friends along and help us introduce newcomers and guests to the club. Meet at Newark Java in the Raley’s shopping center at Jarvis & Newark Blvd., for a ride through the Fremont area.  Don’t forget $$ for a coffee/snack stop.  If you have a club jersey or jacket, this is a great time to wear it.
