FEBRUARY 2009 Ride Calendar

Calendar Guide

The Progressive Ride Series continues this month. The PRS is intended to help club members get prepared to complete a century ride. The rides are progressive in mileage as well as elevation gain, and also give the participants a variety of different rides. The series will continue through March and into April, culminating with the worker’s ride of our own Primavera century route.

This year there are many different ride leaders, and hopefully this will add to the variety. The ride leaders are encouraged to maintain the ride paces as listed in the newsletter. The pace guidelines can be found on the club website. Thank you to all  the volunteer ride leaders! And good luck to all who hope to do their first century this year.

The Cinderella Training Series also continues. This year there are two levels of training rides. To participate in these rides, you must be pre-registered.

1st Week in FEBRUARY

Participation in the series is by pre-registration and limited to registered riders.
For those pre-registered for the Cinderella Challenge Training Series, please join us at ClubSport Fremont located at 46650 Landing Parkway.   Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early so that you can sign-in and hear any last minute instructions before we leave at 8:00 AM sharp.

Sun. Feb. 1        TOC Stage 3 Preview, Part 1
8:30 AM          55 miles, 5B
For the fourth straight year the Tour of California is coming to town.  As with 2006 and 2007, I’d like to lead a “preview” of Stage 3.  The course is similar to other years, but this time, the riders will be heading east, to the Central Valley.
Part 1 will take us from the Niles Parking Lot down through Fremont and Milpitas, before we make that turn on to Sierra Road for the KOM of the day.  We’ll follow the Tour route along Felter and over the Calaveras “Wall” to Sunol before turning off to get home via Niles Canyon.
This is a "No Dawdling" ride; we will have several regroups, but no extended stops.  With an 8:30 start, we should be done in plenty of time for Super Bowl festivities!  (If someone wants to lead an M-pace version of this ride, I can provide route sheets.)

Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, Stanford Univ., Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, and Newark. There are less hills, but more miles than last week. Bring money for a lunch stop. Meet at Mission San Jose park, located about ¼ mile south of Driscoll on Mission Blvd., and just before Mission San Jose HS.

Mon. Feb. 2      Monday Morning Recovery Ride
8:30 AM         40 miles, 1-2 M
Let's meet at the Bicycle Garage at 8:30 for an 8:45 start to an easy-going ride down Paseo Padre to South Grimmer. Then it's a flat ride down past Club Sport to the end of Fremont Blvd. We'll turn around and have a coffee break at a local Starbucks and make our way over to Coyote Hills for a trip back on the trail, ending our ride well before 12:30 (on rare occasions we may head directly home after coffee, shortening the ride to about 30 miles and getting back close to 11:30). Elevation gain is 465 feet. Rain or threat of rain cancels. If rain threatens, call me between 7:30 and 8:00 on the day of the ride.

Get out of bed Sleeping Beauty and meet us at the Bicycle Garage at 9 am for a 9:15 start. The route may not be the exact same as Saturday's Cinderella Ride, but for the purposes of training, it'll be just right! We'll go at the pace of our slowest rider and no one will be left behind. Rain or threat of rain cancels. Milage may vary, void where prohibited by law.

Sat. Feb. 7      TOC Stage 3 Preview, Part 2
9:00 AM       50-60 miles, 5B
This year's East Bay stage finishes in Modesto, but I don’t think we need to ride that far.  I think it will suffice to ride the hills between the two sprints of the day in Livermore and Tracy.  Let's start in Livermore, at the Lucky parking lot at the NW corner of Holmes and Concannon, right on the Tour route.  We’ll follow it up and over Patterson Pass, then out to Tracy, where we’ll have some sort of stop before turning around and heading back to Livermore via Corral Hollow Road.
Outside of the stop in Tracy, we’ll have two summit regroups, but otherwise no-dawdling rules apply.  (Again, if someone wants to lead an M-pace version of this ride, I can provide route sheets.)

Sunol & Kilkare Road
Participation in the series is by pre-registration and limited to registered riders.  New start time and new start location (7:30 AM - Sunol Train Station - Main Street & Kilkare in Sunol).  Arrive with enough time to leave by 7:30.  Rain Policy – show up ready to ride, final decision at start.
Today's ride consists of three different loops using the Sunol Train Station as our start/finish and regroup point.  The first loop is out along Calaveras Road to Sunol Regional Park and back to the train station for a regroup.  Next, we climb Kilkare to the end and then back to the Train Station to regroup for the third loop, which takes us out to Pleasanton for our coffee break.
