Thursday Coffee Ride Encounters First (1973) FFBC President

FFBC's first President in 1973,
Art Massey.  Art was also the first Primavera Chair.

In mid- February, Lori Sommer’s Thurday Coffee group had a beautiful ride across the Dumbarton Bridge and down to Shoreline Park in Mountain View.  On the return trip an older gentleman joined the ride.  He chatted with us as we rode along and identified himself as Art Massey, the first FFBC President in 1973 and the first Primavera Chair.  We stopped the ride and took a few photos, now that the ride had turned into a historic occasion.  Our time with Art was short, but he did tell us he lives on the Peninsula and still rides regularly with the Skyline Cycling Club out of Bicycle Outfitters, in Los Altos.

The city of Fremont actually initiated the creation of FFBC back in the early 1970’s.  Doug Ward, a city of Fremont recreation department employee, was assigned the job of getting the club off the ground.  Doug currently lives in Bend, Oregon and, with the assistance of Dale Bodtker, helped verify information for this story.

Art Massey is third from the left. From left to right: Dale Blanchard, Vanessa McDonnell, Art Massey, Jon Graff, Lambert Caulfield, David Harcos, Cindy Maxwell, Walt Thomas, Donna Boomershine, Vicki Robinson, Winnie Tang, Terri Yi, Lori Sommer, Neil Michelfelder, Molly Michelfelder.
