FFBC BOARD MEETING
DATE: August 5, 2010
ATTENDANCE
Gary Smith (President), Iris Goldman (Treasurer), Karen White (Director-at-Large), Lori Sommer (Secretary), Jorge Gildelatorre (Ride Calendar), Garry Birch (Race Team President/Club Liaison)
CALL TO ORDER / MINUTES: Gary Smith called the Board Meeting to order at 6:38PM. The meeting adjourned at 7:24PM. Minutes for June were approved. There was no July meeting.
TREASURER REPORT
Iris reported the balances for the three accounts: Bank of America Checking, Bank of America CD and Fremont Bank CD. She will post them in the Yahoo group for members to access and review.
RIDE COORDINATOR
- Jorge Gildelatorre stated we don’t have a September pizza ride leader. Vito’s Pizza has expressed an interest in having pizza rides led from their location in Newark, off Stevenson Blvd.
- Sunnyvale Sports Basement Rides took place. Ken Goldman brought ride sheets. Sports Basement opened early so riders could use the restroom facilities before the ride. Next time, we need ride leaders to coordinate and bring routes and sign-in sheets.
RACE TEAM
- The Race Team is planning the last promotion of the year, NCNCA District Team Time Trials on August 14. However, to date, the entries are lower than the minimum needed to cover costs. If 88 athletes are not signed up, the event will be cancelled. Garry will decide next week.
- Garry Birch is getting a few more quotes for the canopy to be purchased with the Chevron grant.
- The Race Team elections will be held next Wednesday.
- A win! Dan Miller took First Place in the Santa Clara Crit. Cat 4/5 Masters 35+ Congratulations!
- 14 year-old Alec was invited to the USAC West Coast Junior Development Camp held at St. Mary’s College in Moraga in July. Garry was very impressed with Alec’s Calaveras Time Trial time of 28 minutes (10 miles). Garry also mentioned that 6 juniors from last year’s development camp went to Belgium for further training.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Karen White is part of the Nominating Committee and gave a status report. The committee is working hard to find members to fill Board and other positions. She mentioned a few nominees have been found to date: Dale Bodker (VP), Jorge Gildelatorre(Ride Calendar), Robin O’Hara (Member Outreach), Marcella Casebolt (Newsletter).
- Wynn Kageyama (FFBC Education Chair) is putting together a workshop to certify ride leaders.
- Isaac Rodriguez, East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) Education Coordinator, introduced himself and invited FFBC to staff a table at the Cycling Festival to be held at REI on Saturday, August 28, 2010. EBBC has a discount on their membership that day and suggested we might do the same for our membership fees. He also discussed the possibility of combining forms to make it easier on potential new members signing up for both organizations.

Dave Ransom reported 464 members and 320 memberships.

See Board Meeting Minutes above. Pam Edillion is the winner of the $25 Bike Garage gift certificate for the July Ride Leader Incentive Drawing. Cindy Maxwell is the winner for the August Drawing.

MISCELLANEOUS
- Conni Smith is coordinating the Annual Club Picnic. She has selected October 9, 2010 at Quarry Lakes, so mark your calendars.
- Karen White, Nominating Committee Chair, urged members to volunteer for positions. The Committee is still searching for members to take on open positions: President, Secretary, Membership, Primavera Chair among others.
- Gary Smith shared information regarding REI’s Cycling Festival to be held on August 28, 2010 at the Fremont REI location. Isaac Rodriguez, EBBC Education Coordinator, introduced himself. Details can be found in the Board Meeting Minutes above. Gary asked for volunteers to staff a table with EBBC, give information about FFBC and sign up any new FFBC members. He proposed we reduce our current 2010 membership fees (after July fees are $10 individual/$13 family) for this one day event to $5 for single memberships and $7 for family memberships. This was voted and passed by the members attending the meeting.
- Pete Maloney introduced himself as a Waves to Wine Ambassador. He has been diagnosed with MS and encouraged members to join him on the Waves to Wine Bike Ride to be held in September. He as done several Waves to Wine rides and explained the logistics of the two-day ride that has over 2,000 riders. The first day starts in San Francisco at AT&T Park and ends in Rohnert Park. The second day riders head to Lake Sonoma in Healdsburg. It is a well supported ride with about 12 miles between rest stops and there are lots of different ride options available. There is a registration fee as well as a minimum fundraising fee. Please see the web site for details: bikecan.nationalmssociety.org
- Wynn Kageyama (FFBC Education Chair) is drafting a response (with EBBC) to list concerns regarding the Niles Canyon Safety Improvement Project Environmental Impact Report. Major safety concerns to cyclists are the installation of rumble strips on the shoulder, increase in vehicle speed due to straightening of the road, increase in traffic, etc.
PROGRAM
Pat Denevan spoke about his company, Mission Soaring. Pat is an FFBC member, married to Becky Denevan and has been hang gliding since the early 70’s. Mission Soaring is located off 680 in Milpitas and offers hang gliding instruction as well as sales and service. Pat explained the similarities between hang gliding and cycling. He brought lots of equipment and showed interesting videos of people learning to hang glide. He was an engaging speaker and offered discounts to club members interested in trying lessons.
