FROM THE SUMMIT
When the Tour of California moved from February to May, I thought that meant there would be better weather for the race. This year’s first stage was canceled because of snow. Even without the ride around Lake Tahoe, it was an exciting race. If you ventured out to see the racers climb Sierra Road, you saw the decisive stage. 39 year-old Chris Horner beat many younger riders to the top and took the overall lead. Horner held the lead all the way to Thousand Oaks and won the race.
Plans are underway for next year’s Primavera, scheduled for April 22, 2012. Andy Sass and Jan Green stepped up to co-chair the 2012 Primavera.
We held the FFBC Spring Pizza Party last month. The turnout was a little lower than expected, and we had plenty of leftover pizza to take home. It was a fun party, and we have Robin O’Hara to thank for organizing it. Unfortunately Robin crashed and broke her wrist a few days after the party. I guess that means Tim will be riding solo for a while.
On June 11, FFBC will have a booth at East Bay Regional Park District’s “Healthy Parks Healthy People” event. The event takes place at Quarry Lakes from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There are still opportunities to volunteer and represent the club at the event.
Cherry City Cyclists included this year’s Primavera in their ride calendar and helped us attract riders. Their Best of the Bay ride takes place on June 18.
I’ve repeatedly said that I was looking forward to better cycling weather only to have more rain in the ensuing month. After a few rainy days in May, I’m once again looking forward to better weather. The summer solstice takes place this month. Maybe we’ll enjoy some summer weather.
I’ll see you on the road.
