Tour de Cure 2011
The Tour de Cure is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and has raised millions of dollars to fund research, provide services, and give voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. This ride is organized to benefit the American Diabetes Association. For a second year, the Fremont Freewheelers has a Team riding in the June 12th Silicon Valley Tour de Cure. It started out as a small team of two riders, but in the last two weeks before the ride, the team has grown to now nine riders strong. So far, the FFBC team is the top fundraiser in the “Clubs & Organizations” category, with all nine members exceeding their fundraising goals. These 9 riders have raised $3,725, since press time.

Egbert and Cindy ready to ride!
The Fremont Freewheelers Team has some amazing riders in the group! The team captain for this year is again Cindy Maxwell. It is Cindy’s fifth time participating in this ride, and it is a ride that is very dear to her heart! For the first time in 2009 she registered as, and organized a team who had a lot of fun riding together. She was happily surprised a few months later when a plaque showed up at her home acknowledging that team as a top fundraiser.
This year’s second member to the team is, FFBC board member, Egbert Vallecillo. He too has a connection to this ride and will be riding it proudly as a ”Red Rider” cyclist. This year’s team is honored to have two Red Riders. These are people who lives with diabetes, ride in the Tour de Cure, and showcases the courage it takes to live every day with this difficult disease. Our Red Riders are one of the reasons we ride the Tour de Cure!

Curtis and his, then 13 year old, son Harrison at the WCC
New members to the team, and the FFBC, are a father and son team. Curtis Hunter and his son Harrison, who recently turned 14 at the end of May, have joined. They are new to FFBC and group riding, but in just a few months they have accumulated an impressive resume. So far this year they have ridden the FFBC Progressive rides, the Primavera 2011, Tierra Bella, Petaluma’s Back Country Challenge, and their first 100 miler at Santa Rosa’s Wine Country Century. Curtis and Harrison will be riding the challenging 120K at the Tour de Cure.
This year we also have representation from our Race Team. Team member, Fernando Colmenares will be representing Team FFBC. He will surely be keeping a brisk pace through the 120K route with fellow FFBC member, Bill Brier by his side. Bill will be riding the Tour de Cure for his employer Johnson & Johnson. Other members on team Fremont Freewheelers are Marie Agleham, David Harcos, Anthony Regala, and Jackie Magno Lagasca. Marie rode on Cindy’s team in 2009 as well.
Tour de Cure events are held in different states where each one has its own character and style. This year, FFBC member Ron Razura traveled to Sourthern California and rode the Ship to Shore Tour de Cure in Long Beach. The Vincent Thomas Bridge was closed to all vehicular traffic just so Ron, and the rest of the Tour de Cure riders, could cycle over it from Long Beach to the beautiful Palos Verdes peninsula. They definitely take care of their riders to ensure they enjoy their rides!
