PRESENTATION
Jon Graff attended a 10-day course in bicycle frame building at United Bicycle Institute in Portland, OR. He presented detailed pictures of his training and results.
A professional bicycle frame builder and the company owner led this extremely well organized course. Both had many years experience instructing novice and experienced student. Each of the seven students was assigned to a fully and professionally outfitted workbench.
Detailed lectures and demonstrations were followed by hands-on work with the instructors carefully assisting each student with their individual project. Jon’s bike frame is chrome moly steel (Kaiser 022 double butted) tubing, fully lugged and silver brazed. At the end of the course he had learned a great deal about frame building and departed with a custom touring frame designed, drafted and built by himself. Many of the other students made bronze brazed, lugless, single speed bike frames. Although Jon’s class was specifically for steel brazing, UBI offers classes TIG welding and Ti frame building.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm
