FROM THE SUMMIT

Hello Fellow Freewheelers

The month of May has been a very busy month for cycling. “Bike to Work Day” was on May 10 and the City of Fremont had an organized ride from Fremont BART to City Hall with some of Fremont’s city officials riding to work. A large group of club members joined this event by riding the two mile route, before heading to work, home, and/or other club rides. It was a great show of support from the FFBC.

The “Amgen Tour of California” again had a stage very close to home. On Tuesday, May 15th the race started in San Jose and made its way through many familiar hills and roads en route to Livermore for the stage finish. Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale held the lead for the first four stages of the race until the time trial in Bakersfield. On that day of stage 5, Dave Zabriskie of Garmin-Barracuda donned his Captain America Time Trial kit and blazed through the course with superhuman strength.  DZ wore the yellow jersey for the rest of the race all the way to his podium victory. I took some great pictures of DZ before the start of stage 3, but unfortunately they didn’t come out.  I forgot to remove the lens cap…DOH!  Check out one of the riders I caught en route to the starting line.

Lastly, last month Vanessa McDonnell made a presentation at our general club meeting encouraging members to consider leading club rides.  It is a really, fun, easy, and rewarding way to give back to your FFBC.  Also, by leading club rides that are posted on our monthly ride calendar, you become eligible for the monthly drawing towards prizes or gift certificates.  Now, are you ready to be a Ride Leader for next month?  We are still looking for Pizza Ride leaders for July, August, and September.

Have a great June and see you on the road!
