FROM THE SUMMIT

What gets you through a tough, challenging ride?  Are you counting down the miles as you near the finish?  Does a song run through your mind and energize you to keep going?  I think we all have mental tricks we play on ourselves to get us through challenging rides.  I sometimes count down the miles as I approach the end of a tough ride.  Songs run through my mind on challenging as well as easy rides.  Sometimes my surroundings remind me of a song lyric and the song will start running through my mind.  Sometimes my cadence or tempo on the bike is similar to that of a certain song, and I’ll start hearing that song in my mind.  For me, the song running through my mind makes the tough parts of the ride go by faster.

Various factors can make a ride challenging.  Distance, terrain and weather all play a part.  Some days you feel stronger on the bike than others.  A ride can seem tougher if you’re by yourself rather than with a group.  One of the great things about our club rides is that you have others to help you get through the challenging parts.  The camaraderie and encouragement of others can make a difference when you undertake something difficult or push yourself a little beyond your comfort zone.  While you might not be enjoying it at the time, a challenging ride with fellow club members can make for lasting memories.  If you want to have more such memories, lead a challenging ride.  Other members will appreciate it, and you will enjoy it too.

Are there cyclists on your holiday shopping list?  Are there cycling items on your wish list?  I hope you find the right gifts for your loved ones and receive gifts you’ll really like.  If you are traveling this holiday season, have a safe journey.

Merry Christmas!

Happy Hanukkah!
