FROM THE SUMMIT
Did you watch the Tour de France? Did you enjoy it? I usually spend a lot of time in July watching the Tour. I watched less of it this year than I usually do. In recent years a number of top riders have been caught or admitted to using performance enhancing drugs (PED’s). These revelations have dampened my enthusiasm for professional bike racing. When I looked at the General Classification (GC) standings for this year’s Tour, I wondered which of the top riders would be suspended next. Maybe I’m not giving the pro racers, particularly those who are young with promising futures, the benefit of the doubt. However, I gave Lance Armstrong the benefit of the doubt for years, only to find out that he, along with some of his teammates, had done what I thought he was unjustly accused of. Perhaps the story of a man recovering from the cancer he had and going on to win the Tour seven times was too good to be true. I believed it, and now I think I was probably a little gullible. When I watched this year’s Tour, it didn’t hold my attention the way it has in previous years. Maybe my enthusiasm for pro racing will return in time. This year I watched more of Wimbledon and the British Open than I did of the Tour.
Our new club jerseys are here! Come to the August meeting to see them and get one. I think you will agree that Marcella Casebolt did a great job designing a classy jersey that we will be proud to wear. We are offering the jerseys at a very reasonable price.
We still need a few people to fill Board positions for 2013-2014. The term begins in October. Many of you have good ideas for the club. Please consider stepping up to serve on the club Board.
I’ll see you on a ride soon.
