FROM THE SUMMIT

If you moved out of the Bay Area, where would you go?  We live in a great area for cycling.  I have visited other areas that offer a wide variety of cycling options, but some don’t have suitable weather for year round cycling.  The Bay Area has favorable weather most of the year.  When we have rain or strong winds, the storms usually don’t last too long.  The Bay Area offers a growing number of cyclists the opportunity to commute to and from work.  While some metropolitan areas may be doing better in this regard, there are also a number of areas not doing as well as the Bay Area.  The new Whole Foods Market in Fremont has bicycle lockers, and it looks like quite a few people are using them.  Years ago, having a number of bicycle lockers at a retail store was just a dream for many of us.

We have quite a variety of places to stop for refreshments during or after Bay Area rides.  If you want coffee or something light to eat, you have plenty of options.  If you want to enjoy a beer or other adult beverage, you also have a number of places to choose from.

Starting or ending a ride on BART enables us to ride routes that would be more difficult without BART.  Not every area has a system such as BART.  In October, the BART Board of Directors unanimously voted to permanently end the ban on bikes during rush hour.  This will make it easier for cyclists who want to commute on BART.  It allows all cyclists to take their bikes on BART anytime during its operating hours.  East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) worked with individual BART Directors to build support for this decision.  Thank you, EBBC.

Many of us enjoyed the club picnic last month.  The food and company were excellent.  We had great weather for riding and relaxing at the picnic.  Thank you, Conni Smith, for organizing an outstanding picnic.

Club memberships expire at year end.  Please remember to renew.  We don’t want to lose any members.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
