FROM THE SUMMIT
In Early Rising: A Natural, Social and Religious Duty, Benjamin Franklin wrote, “There is a feeling of life about the morning sunshine, provoking cheerfulness and vivacity, and he is a great loser who has not his eyes and his heart early open to welcome it.”
When I look at our ride calendar, I think a lot of our ride leaders must agree with Ben Franklin. We have quite a few rides that start early, even in the coldest months of the year. If you would like to start at a different time, earlier or later, lead a ride that suits your schedule. When I lead a ride, we usually start a little later. Perhaps I’m an example of the “great loser” Franklin mentions. When I am familiar with the route and get a late start, I sometimes try to meet up with the group by taking a short cut or riding the route in reverse.
Franklin also said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” If you take the second quote too seriously, you may find it difficult to live up to the first one. Maybe the key is to find the right balance between the two.
If you overindulged and gained a pound or two during the holidays, January is a great time to get back on the bike. If you plan on doing a multi-day trip or challenging ride, now is the time to start getting in shape.
The Primavera is on April 27. The Primavera is a major source of revenue for the club and an event that riders really enjoy. We want to have another strong turnout for the Primavera in 2014. You can help get out the word about the event. Tell your friends about it. Also, posters are available to post in places where potential Primavera riders will see them.
Happy New Year!
