Director-at-Large – Trish Conklin
Supplied scrumptious food for the meeting. See general meeting for more details. No activity with the travelling cases (but almost!).
Treasury Report – Julia Walker
Primavera sold out!
Downside – income is now dropping due to no more Primavera or membership income
Expenses are starting to pick up due to Primavera expenses.
- Resolved the issue of the bounced checks (due to ride leaders holding their checks for longer than 90 days)
- Were reimbursed $125 by American Specialty – our insurance company. They over billed.
There are now 442 members and 328 memberships.
Ride Coordinator – Dave Fishbaugh
Dave made his second proposal for a new rider’s incentive. The general structure is to have a party – similar to the Primavera workers party – 2 times per year. Dave outlined tentative dates, location, invitees and awards/presentations. The Board agreed with his proposal. Dave will get some budgetary numbers for the event and make his final proposal next week.
Dave mentioned that the Best of the Bay (BOB) ride is cancelled this year. The Cherry City Cyclists couldn’t get enough volunteers together to organize the ride.
General Discussion - Luis Facha
Old Business:
Franco Bikes – Still haven’t gotten check from them. Bob M will contact Brian Gokey and Garry Birch and ask them to contact Franco to find out what has happened.
Thermo Fisher – there is no individual who can be a primary interface. Bob M, Luis F, and Julia W have all volunteered to share the interface. Bob M will contact Andrew and explain the arrangement.
New Business:
Washington Health has sent a notice to Lius F that they are holding a Health event including Bike Rodeo on April 26th (same day as the Primavera Ride) and asked if the FFBC would like to man a booth for their event. No one volunteered to take that on, so Luis ask the general club if anyone is interested and will get back to them with the results.
Donation Committee – The Club is looking for members. There will be an announcement in the next two newsletters. June 2nd is the announced meeting date. Members should email Julia if they have any donation recommendations. Trish expressed an interest in being a member.
Board Meeting Adjourned
7:20PM: Dave proposed the meeting be adjourned. Chris seconded it. Meeting adjourned.
FFBC GENERAL MEETING
Meeting opened at 7:30 PM.
Asked if there were any changes or corrections to the previous month’s minutes. No issues. Minutes accepted.
There was one new member present, Paul Marney (hopefully I got the spelling correct).

Supplied some amazingly good food. Members you should all start showing up to try out some of these delicacies. One hors d'oeuvre was Prosciutto over a pea pesto and cream cheese on a nutty wheat bread. A second was an almond on a cream cheese base, inserted into a date. So if you want to find out what Trish dreams up next (plus what our other Board members have to say about club activity!) you’d better show up at the next meeting.
No activity on travelling cases.

Dave said he would soon be presenting to the general club his proposal for a new riders incentive program comprised of two celebrations per year for ride leaders. He's getting some last budgetary details together and will publish the results.
General Topics & Special Presentation – Luis Facha
We immediately got into the special presentation by Joyce Tanaka, longtime club member and also a long time nurse, with a specialty in diabetes. Since diabetes involves the body’s problems with managing blood sugar, Joyce finds managing diabetes analogous to a bike rider trying to manage their energy level for a long ride.
I’ve tried to summarize a few of the key notes from Joyce’s talk. This is not a direct transcription of her talk, just a few items that I (the secretary) thought bicyclists might find useful.
Diabetes Type 1: Chronic condition where the body produces little or no insulin. Medically manageable.
Diabetes Type 2: Chronic condition in one’s body where it does not use insulin properly (called insulin resistance). Medically treatable.
Biggest issue with most non-diabetic people is too many carbs. Need a mix of carbs plus proteins and fats. For reference, pre-diabetes is the new term for border-line diabetes which is when your blood sugar level is above 100-125 (mg/dl) with fasting. Diabetes can be diagnosed when fasting is over 126 mg/dL
Protein: Typical sedentary person needs 50-100g per day per 200 lb body weight
Carbs: Typical order of pasta for example – a fist size portion is sufficient for an individual (45-60g).
Breakfast: It’s important to eat within 2 hours of waking or liver goes into a protection mode and release glucose into the blood stream. Make sure breakfast includes significant protein and some fat to balance any carbs. A typical cereal and milk breakfast would provide much too much carbs. Milk may actually be more carb that protein, so for that reason you should find other sources of protein in the morning (eggs, etc..).
Coffee (caffeine) is not only a strong stimulant but also causes a rise in blood sugar. You can balance this effect by eating a balanced carb/protein food. Coffee: 150-200mg/cup; tea 40 mg/cup.
Carbs are usually available within 15 min of eating. 15g of carbs will cause your blood sugar level to jump 50 points. Protein and fat added to carbs slow processing of blood sugar and may take 45 mins before energy is available for your body. This is helpful when doing a long sustained climb or endurance ride.
If you are bonking on a ride and need a very quick pick up a trick is to suck on something sugary or sweet. Your mouth has the ability to absorb some amount of sugar quickly into your blood stream. This will go almost immediately into your bloodstream.
Alcohol: Many people describe how it gets broken down into sugar and can be used by your body. But in reality it is a poison that requires your liver to process it first and break it down. During that time your liver can not produce the sugars it normally does. Instead it takes a few hours to break down the alcohols. When the liver has completed the task of metabolizing the alcohol it can finally release sugar into the blood stream. So there is very little direct benefit of alcohol in providing energy and quite a bit of downside.
Bonking – Riders should also be aware another significant and often overlooked contributor to bonking is lack of water.
Liquid Proteins/Perpetuem protein sources – Those items in general are good but you should check to see which your body tolerates. It is very subjective. During a ride, by the end of two hours, you have burned all your glucose stores. The body then starts breaking down protein and fat.
Other good choices for energy and protein sources: A good breakfast would be egg whites and oatmeal. Potatoes with salt are great. Watermelon is also a good source of quick energy. Other alternatives: half strength (watered down) Gatorade – to reduce the sugar spike but get some electrolytes. Tums is also good for electrolytes.
Caloric reference: Fat: 9 calories/gram; Protein: 4 calories/gram; carbs: 4 calories/gram; alcohol: 7 calories/gram
Glycemic Index: relates to the rate at which a carb raises blood sugar. A lower number means a lower spike in blood sugar. Recommend adding protein and a healthy fat to anything high in carbs.
Raw Vegetables- Raw vegetables are harder to digest so they may not be as beneficial as slightly cooked or steamed vegetables.
Statins for cholesterol versus riding – “Modern statins” are compatible with biking. Older statins used to cause muscle breakdown.
Milk Chocolate versus dark chocolate – Milk Chocolate has a lot more sugar and therefore not recommended. Dark chocolate has other heart benefits as well.
Ibuprophen and other NSAIDS – prevent lactic acid buildup which reduces pain. But lactic acid provides energy for building muscle. Taking an NSAID as a way to prevent pain or treat muscle soreness may reduce the important benefit of building muscle.
That concluded an awesome presentation. Members, you missed out on an excellent presentation. Don’t miss the next one!!
